The Role
The Technical Author will prepare, originate, and present technical information that enables stakeholders to understand background, risk, safety, justification, change control, and step-by-step engineering sequences relating to Operations, Plant, and Procedures.
Key Objectives
- Document Origination & Retention: Use technical knowledge, experience, and research to formulate, collate, analyse, and evaluate information to produce documentation including Method Statements, Risk Assessments, and Change control documentation.
- Undertake office-based activities and, where required, site inspections, equipment reviews, and operational walk-downs.
- Apply appropriate, current, and proven engineering principles, methodologies, and procedures.
- Structure and sequence information clearly, developing illustrations where necessary and in line with recognised documentation standards.
- Proofread own work and edit the work of others to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Prepare and submit approved documentation under the direction of the Site Manager or Project Manager to meet agreed schedules.
- Index and catalogue documentation to ensure secure storage and efficient retrieval.
Technical Liaison & Support
- Liaise with project team members, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients on engineering, scientific, and technical matters under management direction.
- Originate technical documents and reports for clients.
- Contribute to technical and project meetings.
- Respond to technical queries with informed advice and accurate information.
- Provide technical input and support to tenders and bids when required.
Commercial Awareness
- Contribute to business development through internal communication and referral of relevant information.
- Recognise the commercial, safety, and reputational impact of actions on the organisation, clients, and external stakeholders.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- ONC or equivalent in engineering, communications, or a related discipline – Essential.
- HND or Degree in Engineering – Desirable.
- Membership of a relevant professional or technical body – Desirable.
- Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH Working Safely or equivalent) – Desirable (training available).
Experience & Knowledge
- Proven experience producing and originating technical or working documentation – Essential.
- Experience in a radiological processing or waste handling environment – Essential.
- Experience copy-editing and reviewing technical documentation produced by others – Essential.
- Familiarity with controlled document management, cataloguing, and indexing systems – Desirable.
- Ability to liaise effectively with internal teams and client representatives – Desirable.
- Experience delivering to tight deadlines across multiple projects – Desirable.
- Strong planning, organisation, and time-management skills – Desirable.
- Knowledge of industry systems, legal compliance, and ISO standards – Desirable.
