A local government council is seeking volunteers for its TechMates program aimed at providing digital mentoring to vulnerable residents. As a TechMate, you will offer one-to-one support in using digital devices and applications, helping the community build confidence in technology. This role is flexible, includes full training, and volunteers can earn a qualification upon supporting two learners. Ideal for those looking to make a positive impact in their local community while enhancing their CV.
We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.
We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!
TechMates is a digital mentor service run by our volunteers and council staff.
It was introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, to prevent isolation for our most vulnerable residents.
TechMates provide one-to-one basic digital support over the telephone, via video call and in-person at our TechMates tea parties.
We help people use digital technologies such as smartphones, tablets, computers or laptops so our community can build digital confidence.
If you regularly use a computer, mobile device and the internet, the TechMates program needs you! As a TechMate, you will use your passion for digital to transform the lives of some of the borough’s most in need residents, while adding something invaluable to your CV.
You will provide support to help people learn basic digital skills, such as :
Communicating with friends and family online through social media and video calls
Transacting online using council and government services and banking / safe shopping
Most TechMate appointments run for 1 to 2 hours each week and TechMates tea parties, taking a little longer. We encourage you to keep things flexible and arrange times that suit both you and your TechMate learner.
To volunteer you must be aged 15 or over. For under 18s, a parent or guardian will be required to complete a volunteering consent form.
Will there be training?
Yes, full training and support will be provided. This includes :
After supporting two learners, you may be considered for the TechMates AQA Level 3 qualification. The qualification is free to complete and a great achievement to add to your CV.
The TechMates project gives volunteers the chance to be part of a cutting-edge digital project and receive bespoke training and support. The program enables volunteers to add something extraordinary and invaluable to their CV, learn new digital skills and take part in exciting learning opportunities. The program also offers the opportunity to help some of the most vulnerable members of our community to get online and feel part of the modern world. Volunteers will experience the reward that comes from inspiring people to realise their digital potential, skills and celebrate ‘light bulb’ moments with the people they support.
