Teaching Assistant – Alternative Provision – Challenging Behaviour

Are you a resilient and motivated Teaching Assistant looking for a role where you can make a genuine difference to young people who need support the most? This secondary Alternative Provision in South Birmingham is seeking a Teaching Assistant to support students with challenging behaviours and social, emotional and mental health needs.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building positive relationships, understands the barriers young people face, and remains calm under pressure. As a Teaching Assistant you will be supporting students on a 1‑2‑1 basis, managing behaviours and helping them to regulate their behaviours. This role requires a Teaching Assistant who has previous experience supporting young people who have faced academic or social barriers. You will be joining a welcoming and supportive team of Teaching Assistants and Teachers who are determined to make a difference.

Job Role:
  • Providing classroom support for students aged 11–16
  • Working 1-2-1 and with small groups to encourage engagement and progress
  • Supporting students with challenging behaviours using positive and consistent strategies
  • Building strong relationships, acting as a positive role model and trusted adult
  • Assisting teachers with behaviour management and lesson delivery
  • Using de‑escalation techniques to support emotional regulation
  • Helping students develop social skills, confidence and resilience
You Will Need:
  • Minimum 6 months experience working with young people with challenging behaviours or barriers to learning
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and use de‑escalation techniques
  • A patient, empathetic and consistent approach
  • A passion for supporting young people to re‑engage with education
  • Level 2/3 qualification in supporting teaching and learning desirable
