Job description
Overview

Are you a Chemistry graduate with a passion for your subject and a desire to inspire the next generation? Teach Hurst gives you the opportunity to get straight into the classroom and earn a salary whilst training to teach on-site at Hurstpierpoint College, one of Sussex's most successful independent schools. You'll earn a salary from day one, gain hands-on classroom experience, and receive fully funded training - all while living on our stunning campus just 20 minutes from Brighton.

Teach Hurst is a highly desirable teacher training programme - last year alone we received over 1000 applications. If you are excited by this opportunity we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

What’s on offer
  • A competitive starting salary from day one of £31,000, increasing as you progress through the programme.
  • No fees! We will offer you a unique programme of fully funded teacher training including sponsorship of PGCE and Early Career Teachers (ECT) training.
  • Free on-site accommodation at our impressive Sussex campus, twenty minutes from the city and beaches of Brighton and within easy reach of London by local rail links.
  • Other benefits include free meals during term time, and access to a wide range of sports and leisure opportunities as part of our Co-curricular programme.
  • Following Teach Hurst, many continue their career at Hurst into positions of responsibility, such as Head of Department or Head of Year, with pay increases to match!
What are we looking for
  • Talented and enthusiastic Chemistry graduates who can demonstrate a passion for their subject area and working with children.
  • One key to our success as a school is excellent staff. We value all our teachers and whether you join us straight from university, or after an initial career in another area of work, we believe every teacher's experience and background are important.
Why Teach Hurst?

"The main aspect that drew me to Teach Hurst over a regular PGCE route was the way in which I was able to work in the classroom straight away. This may seem quite daunting but I was supported by my mentor, Head of Department, Director of Professional Development and Performance and a large group of like-minded individuals who were also beginning their training."

- Mr Nick Chadwell, Housemaster and Business Studies Teacher

Programme structure

In essence, the programme consists of:

  • Year 1: Building classroom experience, knowledge and pedagogy through observation and class teaching on a reduced timetable.
  • Year 2: A fully funded, in-school, PGCE course provided by Buckingham University. Increased teaching load and further responsibility.
  • On completion of Year 2 you will gain QTS (qualified teacher status) and progress onto the Early Teacher Career Framework and the Hurst qualified teacher scale with reflective salary increase. Throughout the ECT period you will continue to be mentored and given the opportunity to take on roles of responsibility and leadership across the college.
Safeguarding

Hurstpierpoint College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
