Job description

We require an enthusiastic Tax professional to play a key role within the Finance Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of the indirect and direct (non‑payroll) tax affairs within QMUL and the QMUL group of companies, ensuring that tax liabilities are appropriately discharged. The Tax Manager is the professional lead for Tax matters in the university providing direct advice to internal stakeholders or procuring this from third parties for more complex tax scenarios. The role therefore plays a key role in managing relationships with external stakeholders such as auditors, advisors, tax authorities and networks. The post is offered with the opportunity for hybrid working and is based at Department W in Whitechapel, London. The role is closely aligned to the Financial Accounting Team and reports directly to the Deputy Director of Finance, Financial Controls and Systems.

Qualifications
  • Hold a professional tax qualification (CTA, AIIT, or ATT with a view to achieving a higher qualification) due to the technical & developing nature of the role, or
  • A qualified accountant with a CCAB accounting body and demonstrable tax experience
  • Experience devising tax strategies to maximise the recovery of VAT and other taxes, particularly partial exemption models
  • Experience with VAT, Corporation Tax, CEST requirements and ideally imports and exports tax and custom duties
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills with a structured and logical approach to the completion of tasks
  • High standard of written communication, demonstrated by experience in producing reports for senior managers and other stakeholders
  • Good interpersonal skills, demonstrated by an ability to develop and progress working relationships with senior managers across the university, colleagues and key external bodies
  • Proficient in the use of IT and Microsoft Office products, especially Word and Excel (including pivot tables and VLookup)
