Overview

2 Years Fixed Term Contract / Secondment Opportunity. Our Public Realm Division ensures that the London Borough of Hackney is clean, safe and accessible for all residents, businesses and visitors. The Streetscene team is responsible for the design and maintenance of all highway networks, footways, bridges and lighting on public roads, contributing to the well-being of our community and creating a sustainable public realm. The Sustainable Transport and Engagement team delivers smarter travel and road safety programmes to influence behaviour change towards safer and more sustainable forms of travel.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sustainable Transport Planner to assist in managing and progressing an ambitious project at the forefront of transport planning. You will help to deliver projects across sustainable and active travel with a focus on shared mobility and decarbonisation of transport.

Working in partnership with an appointed service delivery partner, you will support the planning and delivery of forward-looking sustainable and shared mobility networks in Hackney that will accelerate the uptake of cleaner travel options, delivering improvements to air quality for residents. You will work under the supervision of a senior transport planner, with opportunities to take the lead in some project work.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in managing and progressing sustainable transport projects with a focus on shared mobility and decarbonisation.
  • Support planning and delivery of sustainable and shared mobility networks in Hackney in partnership with a service delivery partner.
  • Contribute to stakeholder engagement and public consultation planning in coordination with the Council’s communications team.
  • Analyse data to inform decisions, including collection, assembly and analysis of background material.
  • Support delivery of statutory and legal obligations related to transportation (e.g., traffic management orders) and Council decision-making processes.
  • Demonstrate report writing, knowledge of transport policy, and interpretation of transport strategies; proficient verbal communication.
  • Utilise GIS where possible and engage with stakeholders including politicians to manage expectations.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Relevant degree or equivalent (minimum requirement). Experience or further qualifications in Transport Planning or a relevant skill such as project management is an advantage.
  • Willingness to receive training relevant to transport planning and project work.
  • Strong data handling and analysis skills; familiarity with Excel (e.g., pivot and lookup features).
  • Knowledge of GIS is a considerable benefit.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, write reports, and engage with stakeholders including politicians.
