Staff Nurse – Fixed term 12 months & Permanent

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust – Outpatients Department, Sutton – Band 5 – Full Time

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is one of the leading cancer centres in the world and has an international reputation for the care and treatment it provides. The Trust serves a local, regional, national, and international population from two hospital sites, Chelsea and Sutton.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Band 5 staff nurse to join our nursing team to provide expert care and support our patients in the Outpatients department at the Sutton site. The department manages multi‑speciality medical oncology clinics including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The phlebotomy and line access (Central venous access devices) service is also run by the Outpatient team.

The post holder will work in the outpatient department in the new cancer centre at Sutton. This centre is open Monday‑Friday 08.00 – 20.00.

We offer many new and exciting innovative opportunities for a Band 5 nurse within the Royal Marsden Trust. This is a great opportunity to develop your existing skills and knowledge, and also to learn new ones in caring for cancer patients at all points of their cancer pathway.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence‑based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way, drawn up in conjunction with the shift co‑ordinator.
  • Develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities administered within the unit.
  • Develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of managing a shift with the guidance of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.
  • Complete the first level assessment of the patient’s needs to understand the physiological, psycho‑social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients with cancer and their families, and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met.
  • Assist with teaching patients in preparation for investigations, treatment and home care.
  • Be aware of the side effects of any treatment in progress, and adopt a problem‑solving approach to minimise the potentially adverse reactions.
Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will be a qualified Staff Nurse with at least a year’s experience in an acute hospital setting. We seek someone who is flexible, a good team player and has a real commitment to providing good quality patient care. Experience of working in a clinic setting would be an advantage but is not essential.
