Overview

The successful candidate will be joining an established medical team in the Medicine and Emergency Care Division which is currently going through a period of expansion and redesign.

The post holder will be expected to provide senior decision making support to the emergency medical pathway and to the ongoing provision of safe personal and effective medical care to the acutely medically unwell patient and/or to patients attending Diabetes & Endocrinology clinics.

They will work alongside Diabetes & Endocrinology consultants who will be available at all times to provide support if needed but it is expected that the post holder will largely be able to manage their own patient workload.

  • Salary: Speciality Doctor scale. Applications from part-time applicants will be considered.
  • Job plans will be negotiated on an individual annualised basis, with time allocated to CPD, training, service development, research or individual specialty interests where appropriate. Sub-specialty interests will be discussed and supported.
Career development

  • Support to pursue the CESR process to gain GMC specialist registration in both specialities.

Department and trust information

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in 2003 from the merger of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley NHS Trust and the Burnley Hospitals NHS Trust. The Trust provides services to approximately 520,000 people.

Services are provided from two main sites: Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. The Royal Blackburn Hospital and Phase V at Burnley General Hospital are significant PFI developments. The ED at Blackburn is the sole ED for East Lancashire and became a Trauma Unit in the Lancashire Trauma network in 2012. The ED is supported by Urgent Care Centres at Blackburn and Burnley and a Minor Injuries Unit at Accrington. Burnley houses the East Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre with an in-patient Obstetric Unit and a midwife-led birthing unit in Blackburn. In 2012 Royal Blackburn Hospital was designated as a Lancashire Vascular Centre. The Trust has close links with tertiary centres in Lancashire, Manchester and Liverpool.

Entry requirements
  • For entry into the Specialty Doctor grade, applicants must have at least 2 years of experience in Diabetes & Endocrinology outpatients after full Registration.
  • Demonstrable experience and expertise in dealing with general and complex diabetic and endocrine conditions in outpatients and inpatient settings.
  • Participation in unselected acute medical take in General Medicine and ability to work with remote Consultant support if needed.
Additional role information
  • This is a new role within the department; workload and demands will be reviewed regularly to ensure good working conditions.
  • Appropriate time for clinical administration will be included in the role.
  • The post holder will be expected to contribute to weekend duties.
  • There is an active SAS mentoring system to support the candidate's development.
