Job description

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute hospital services (at the Great Western Hospital) and maternity services across Wiltshire. At the Great Western Hospital we have all of the facilities you would expect to find in a busy general hospital, including an Emergency Department with separate Paediatric area, a Children’s Unit with Paediatric Assessment Unit, a Local Neonatal Unit, a Delivery Suite next to the Baby Unit, a full range of diagnostic tests such as X‑ray, MRI and CT scans, outpatient clinics and 21 inpatient wards.

We have an impressive track record on issues such as patient safety and infection control. We have exciting projects in neonatology and acute paediatrics, as well as an active programme of transition from child to adult services across all specialties. We also run an active Learning from Excellence process.

The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

  • Provide expert care in General Paediatrics and Neonatology working closely with the wider multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Lead Paediatric and Neonatal ward rounds, attend outpatient clinics, and participate in acute admissions.
  • Contribute to the paediatric and neonatal Tier 2 (middle grade/registrar) on‑call rota, including evenings and weekends.
  • Work collaboratively with allied health professionals and child protection teams to ensure holistic, safe care.
  • Participate in the supervision, teaching, and mentoring of resident doctors and medical students.
  • Support ongoing clinical governance, audit, and service improvement within the paediatric department.
  • Engage in multi‑agency and multidisciplinary meetings, including safeguarding and care planning.
  • Lead the newly developing Specialty Doctor team in Paediatrics.

Management and Leadership Responsibilities
  • All staff in each Directorate are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician and to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Directorate.
  • The Specialist Doctor and their Specialty Doctor team will be key members of the Directorate team and are accountable and responsible for following the changes to service that will improve the patient experience set out by senior members of the team.
  • To support and supervise junior colleagues as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the leadership and development under the direction of the Lead Clinician and Associate Medical Director and in line with the Trust’s business plans.
  • The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Directorate, including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.
  • Work within the Trust’s framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures.
