Specialist Doctor in Trauma and Orthopaedic

Title: Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialist Doctor (Hand, Wrist and Elbow)

The position is part of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Directorate, working across all University Hospitals Dorset sites. A specialist interest in Hand, Wrist and Elbow Surgery is sought.

The post will be paid on the Specialist Grade, at 10 basic PAs with an out of hours commitment 1:5 weekends.

Closing date is 23 January 2026

Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake regular hand/wrist elective and trauma theatre lists / LA Procedure room lists
  • Conduct virtual and face‑to‑face elective outpatient and fracture clinics
  • Support and supervise junior doctors and middle‑grade staff
  • Perform ward rounds and patient review
  • Maintain a specialist interest in Elbow, Wrist and Hand Surgery

Main duties

The successful candidate will provide a mixture of operating and outpatient clinic activity in Trauma and Orthopaedics. The Trust expects support and delivery of service improvement programmes.

Job plan (first three months)

  • Monday AM: RBH OPD elective clinic SWR alternate weeks
  • Monday PM: RBH OPD elective clinic JJS
  • Tuesday: Weekly LA Elective hand procedure room Poole St Marys
  • Wednesday AM: Poole Fracture clinic
  • Wednesday PM: Poole Theatre
  • Thursday: All day Poole Trauma list alternate weeks
  • Friday: All day RBH Elective list alternate weeks

Person specification

Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH
  • Minimum 6 years whole time equivalent working in Orthopaedics (Speciality Doctor or equivalent) and/or closed SAS grades, including overseas experience accepted
  • Existing Associate Specialist or eligible to apply for the Specialist Doctor position
