Qualifications

Job Summary

As a Senior Sonographer, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality diagnostic ultrasound services across a range of specialties. You will be responsible for independently managing and reporting on your own patient caseload, synthesising clinical history and scan findings to produce accurate diagnostic reports, and seeking second opinions when clinically appropriate. You will uphold and advance professional standards through active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and contribute to the development of the ultrasound service by leading audits, supervising students, and teaching junior doctors and allied health professionals. Additionally, the post holder is required to provide image reports for an additional area of speciality such as x-ray and/or MRI.

Main Duties of the Job

Scope and range: carry out a range of ultrasound examinations to agreed protocols and standards. Provide written reports after synthesising history and scan findings to make a diagnosis. Teach Student Sonographers, Midwives, Student Radiographers, and Junior Doctors with an interest in Ultrasound. Assist the department’s ambition to receive and maintain QSI accreditation.

Job Description and Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
  • Carry out obstetric, gynaecological (including trans‑vaginal scanning), abdominal, small parts, and vascular ultrasound examinations to agreed protocols and standards, as required.
  • Provide written reports after synthesising patient history and scan findings into a diagnosis.
  • If qualified, carry out MSK ultrasound scans and injections.
  • Seek second opinions where necessary.
  • Be accountable for own professional actions and decision making within clinical protocols.
  • Provide a high‑quality reporting service and act as a role model for the radiology service at PAHT.
Patient Care & Communication
  • Communicate scan results to patients verbally as appropriate, recognising that the news may be unwelcome and sometimes upsetting.
  • Explain sometimes inconclusive results and how they may be interpreted.
  • Communicate scan results to the referrer with the appropriate degree of urgency, recognising that patient management may depend on the findings.
  • Provide a very high standard of patient care at all times and refer patients for timely management.
  • Abide by rules of patient confidentiality and the Data Protection Act.
Equipment & Systems
  • Maintain expensive and highly complex ultrasound equipment, reporting faults and breakdowns to the Superintendent Sonographer.
  • Participate in evaluation of new ultrasound equipment prior to procurement.
  • Use the Radiology Systems, CRIS, Viewpoint, and PACS appropriately to record patient examination details and images.
Leadership, Management & Training
  • Report any accidents, incidents, or complaints to the Superintendent Sonographer in a timely manner.
  • Supervise Student Sonographers, providing clinical training and sharing knowledge as required.
  • Maintain effective liaison with all disciplines of Radiology staff and staff external to the department.
  • Manage own workload and success measures effectively.
  • Support the reporting team, management and clinical leads in meeting operational and strategic targets, and improving the quality of patient care within Radiology.
Governance & Development
  • Undertake training and study necessary to maintain a high level of professional knowledge and expertise.
  • Expand current practice in line with clinical governance and assist in setting departmental protocols and standards.
  • Understand, comply with and implement departmental and Trust policies and procedures.
  • Participate in audits in clinical areas to ensure competence and compliance.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
  • DMU or Pg Certificate or Diploma in medical ultrasound or equivalent.
  • HCPC Registered Radiographer.
  • Clinical image reporting qualification such as in MRI or X‑Ray.
Experience Essential
  • Full range of ultrasound experience, including Obstetrics & Gynaecology and General Medical Ultrasound.
  • Independently reporting in all scan areas.
  • Experience teaching and assessing student Sonographers.
Desirable
  • Recent NHS Experience.
  • Experience in vascular US.
  • Experience in MSK US.
