As the Senior SACT Nurse, you are responsible for delivering chemotherapy nursing services topatients within the unit and to deputise for the line manager where required.
Key areas for the role:Provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through all stages of treatment. Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care for patients undergoing chemotherapy, assessing health, health related and nursing needs of patients, their families and other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate stepsfor effective care. This will include -
o Managing a patient caseloado Close liaison with medical consultantso Ordering diagnostic tests within agreed parameterso Running nurse-led clinicsWork autonomously whilst providing clinical leadership, ensuring all patients have anaccurate plan of care, which reflects the assessment undertaken and incorporates theissues and recommendations made ensuring clear documentation in the patientsrecordsDemonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in intravenous access, the managementof central venous catheters, venepuncture, and chemotherapy delivery, including themanagement of anaphylaxis and extravasation.Reporting lines -
As Senior SACT Nurse, you report directly to the Lead SACT Nurse.You have no direct reports.Reporting lines and direct reports may change from time to time in line with the requirements ofthe role.
Your key responsibilities -
Practice advanced life support to facilitate rapid stabilisation and the appropriate ongoing management of patients who develop acute treatment complicationsRotate into the 24-hour on call team to provide out of hours support and triage topatientsDeliver a seamless service through the development of enhanced communication withkey stakeholders and patient care contributorsAssist in the development and audit of assessment tools that will ensure an appropriatelevel of nursing intervention so that patients who present with the most complex needsare referred to the appropriated specialist including patients and families who requiremore in-depth support and counsellingParticipate in the identification and development of clinical protocols and strategies toenhance both the continuity and standard of specialist careEnsure all care is given in accordance with agreed protocolsWork in line with and contribute to local delivery of national care standardsWork alongside radiographers and outpatient staff to ensure holistic care ismaintained throughout the GenesisCare centre and rotate to support otherdepartments where requiredEnsure all patients are fully informed of the risks and benefits of proposed procedures/treatments, contributing to the process of securing informed consentProduce and provide all patients with relevant and accessible written informationregarding their treatmentSupervise and participate in the delivery of programmes of education and training perthe identified needs of clients, carers and other involved in their careWork with junior staff to identify knowledge gaps in relation to chemotherapy patientsand ensure staff are appropriately educatedLead on the specific areas of development of nursing practice within the teamTo provide expert knowledge and advice in own specialist area, ensuring maintenanceof clinical excellence underpinned by evidence-based practice.Participate in clinical audit within the chemotherapy service, raising the profile andenhancing the contribution of nursing to patient care and informing business andservice development plansInitiate and lead on research projects within the departmentUtilise up to date research/evidence to deliver patient care and to disseminate thisknowledge to all members of the multi-professional teamBe aware of current research trials being conducted within own specialist area and tobe able to inform patients about thesePromote nursing research and evidenced based practiceFulfil the role of mentor, providing peer support to staff working within thechemotherapy serviceTake responsibility for competency assessment or members of staff providingmentorship toParticipate in the management of change to improve standards and communicationlinks with all external providersComply with measures to actively manage and reduce risk to patients. Ensuring theformal reporting and recording of adverse incidentsUtilise and maintain information systems to aid audit and to provide regular activityanalysis reportsMaintain contemporaneous and accurate treatment records, submitting relevantstatistics, reports and activity data as requested.
