Job Overview

Band 8 Senior Psychologist based at HMP Humber providing clinical oversight for the Offending Behaviour Programme – Building Choices. The role also offers a diverse range of opportunities including supporting trainee psychologist development, assessment, intervention, training, research and consultancy tasks. Work may be allocated in other prisons across North East England and the community, with hybrid working supported.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct full case reviews on difficult cases and give authoritative advice on sentence plans.
  • Specialise in the delivery of psychology services in therapeutic community wings or PIPEs.
  • Lead, supervise and facilitate group sessions.
  • Provide professional opinion to multi‑functional teams on offender reports (risk, parole, high‑risk or vulnerable offenders).
  • Develop risk assessment and intervention strategies (e.g. sexual offending, indeterminate sentence).
  • Deliver and supervise treatment management of complex programmes such as the Healthy Sex Programme.
  • Provide consultancy support to Senior Management and wider staff.
  • Conduct relevant research, including data gathering and analysis.
  • Act as a professional witness in parole board hearings, multi‑agency meetings and, where appropriate, as an expert witness in court proceedings.
  • Manage and provide professional supervision to trainee forensic psychology staff.
  • Mentor and support trainee psychologists and other staff towards chartered and registered status.
  • Ensure staff development aligns with key competencies and gateway requirements.
  • Lead risk assessment and risk management of complex, vulnerable or high‑risk offenders.
  • Contribute to offender management processes (e.g. ACCT, self‑harm, personality disorder assessments).
  • Provide a psychological contribution to wider service provision (therapeutic community, regime activity).
  • Prepare psychological reports for life‑sentence convictions within required timeframes.
  • Maintain professional HCPC registration and comply with accreditation audit baselines.
  • Line‑manage trainee psychologists.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council – eligible to use a protected title.
  • Professional background in Psychology.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision.
  • Completed training in effective models of treatment and best practice.
  • Likely to be a Chartered Psychologist and full member of the appropriate BPS division (if required).
  • Minimum two years post‑registration experience at the point of taking up the post.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English (Welsh where specified for Wales).
Technical Requirements
  • Registered Practitioner Psychologist with HCPC.
  • Eligible to use a protected title.

Expectations include effective decision‑making, leadership, communication, teamwork, development of self and others, quality service management and delivering at pace. The position is a 37‑hour working week with unsocial hour allowances and hybrid working provisions.
