Senior Radiographer

We are looking for a dedicated, skilled Band 6 Radiographer to work within our team at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at Aintree University Hospital and the North Liverpool Community sites (St Chads, Litherland town hall and Kenilworth Road).
The successful candidate will work independently producing radiographic images of the highest diagnostic quality with the minimum radiation dose to patients and staff whilst maintaining excellent standards of patient care.
You will be capable of supervising and supporting a team of radiographers, imaging assistants, student radiographers, assistant practitioners and radiographer apprentices, offering advice and supervision to less experienced staff.
Participation in the shift rota is essential.
Main duties of the job
- General first line supervision of radiographic work within the Radiology Department.
- Tuition of the Radiographic students in Radiographic imaging and Interpretation.
- Supervision and coordination of the clinical team, performing imaging examinations at a consistently high technical and professional standard.
- Support the Band 7 Lead Radiographers for taking responsibility for the day to day activity within the x-ray department.
- Assist with & support development of Band 5 Radiographers and Assistant Practitioners ensuring compliance with department protocols and procedures.
- Ensuring QA, preventative maintenance and breakdown is completed and records are maintained.
- Involvement in Audit, Research and Presentations.
- Maintain correct patient records and statutory radiation records.
- Ensure that the code of Practice for Radiation Safety, as drawn up in the Local Rules, is observed at all times, and report any breaches or problems concerning these rules to the Senior RPS / RPA.

Job responsibilities
- To maintain a high standard of work and to strive for continual improvements in radiographic standards and patient care.
- Undertake complex decisions by assessing patient records and referral information to inform clinical practice, selecting the correct imaging intervention from a range of possibilities to facilitate optimisation.
- Effectively communicate with other trust staff including support staff, professional colleagues, managers and consultant staff to ensure the appropriateness of imaging procedures in relation to the patient’s condition.
- Provide specialist advice to junior staff/colleagues and act as a role model, contributing to the maintenance and improvement of staff morale across all staff groups.
- Deputise for the Principal Radiographer when required.
- Effectively and fairly allocate tasks to members of the team in order to successfully manage the workload of the area in which they are working.
- Explain procedures to patients to facilitate their full understanding and cooperation throughout the examination.
- Develop a good working knowledge of the functionality of all appropriate equipment within the department and ensure that competency frameworks are completed for all imaging equipment and reviewed annually.
- Follow the statutory Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulation (IR(ME)R) procedures, and undertake the duties of an IR(ME)R Operator.
- Ensure that imaging requests are clear and appropriate as dictated by the Royal College of Radiologists guidelines, and take appropriate action if they fail to meet the guidelines, providing guidance for more junior staff as required.
- Use computerised and manual methods of documentation to provide accurate imaging patient records and ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act when handling patient information.
- Counsel and mentor staff to promote welfare and knowledge of roles.
- Provide indirect supervision for Band 5 radiographers and direct supervision for assistant practitioners and assist in their personal development.
- Provide supervision and training of student radiographers, assistant practitioners and imaging assistants when required, including undertaking student assessments.
- Regularly access personal Trust email account as this is a common mechanism of communication across the Trust.
- Log a datix incident form when things go wrong or if there is a near miss event, providing witness statements to support incident investigation.
- Ensure that any faults in equipment, fixtures, fitting or fabric are recorded and notified to the appropriate persons.
