Senior Mechanical Technician

Location: Norwich

Salary: £34,000 - £40,000

This is a senior, hands-on Mechanical Technician role within a bespoke manufacturing environment producing custom-engineered, one-off and low-volume products. Working closely with the Workshop Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring production is delivered safely, on time, cost-effectively, and to the high-quality standards expected by customers. A core part of the role is providing technical leadership on the shop floor, supporting and guiding the assembly team, driving productivity through positive management, and contributing to continuous improvement across manufacturing operations.

The Role
  • Take the lead in assembling high-quality mechanical components, sub-assemblies, and frameworks
  • Read and interpret detailed CAD models and engineering drawings
  • Provide technical leadership and hands-on support to the assembly team
  • Recommend innovative and practical solutions to complex mechanical challenges
  • Ensure designs meet functional, safety, and compliance requirements
  • Work closely with subcontract machinists, fabricators, and suppliers to support manufacturability
  • Provide technical input during prototype builds and production runs
  • Identify and resolve design or process issues to maintain project timelines
  • Communicate technical information clearly to internal teams
  • Support client reviews and incorporate feedback into design iterations
Quality, Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all products meet internal quality standards and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental policies
  • Check and maintain lifting and air equipment in line with HSE regulations
  • Support adherence to ISO9001 and ISO14001 standards and continuous quality improvement
  • Promote safe working practices and wellbeing across all operations

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and technical documentation
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, project-driven environment
  • Excellent planning, prioritisation, and decision-making skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal ability
  • Excellent problem-solving capability with a hands-on approach
  • Proven ability to lead teams and train individuals
  • Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (Level 3 or above)
  • Minimum 10 years' experience within a mechanical engineering manufacturing environment
  • Methodical and logical approach, strong technical aptitude, adaptability, resilience, and confidence working with colleagues, suppliers, customers, and senior management.
  • Self-driven, quality-focused, comfortable taking responsibility and accountability
  • Able to commute reliably to the Norwich site
  • Willing to stay away one or two nights per month if required
  • Flexible approach to working hours and overtime
  • Clean or near-clean driving license
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the UK and overseas
  • Preferred experience includes strong knowledge of materials, machining, fabrication, and assembly processes, experience working on bespoke low-volume builds with tight deadlines, familiarity with ISO standards and CE / UKCA compliance, and working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, email, and internet applications.

Hours & Holiday
  • Monday to Friday, 08:00-17:00 (lunch 13:00-13:30)
  • Overtime expected in line with production requirements
  • Seasonal variation: extended hours in winter, reduced hours in summer
  • 24 days annual leave (including 3-4 days taken during the Christmas shutdown) plus public holidays
