BSI are seeking a Senior Maintenance Engineer to join us at our testing lab in Hemel Hempstead.

You will be working as part of the Lab Support team within the workshop alongside the design team, delivery technicians, contractors and facilities departments, assisting with or running maintenance and project activities across the Lab.

As our Senior Maintenance Engineer you’ll be responsible for ensuring the efficient operation, maintenance and repair of all equipment, machinery and services at the Hemel Hempstead site.

Reporting to the Operations Support Manager this role involves providing technical expertise, leadership, improvement and guidance to the maintenance team to maintain the highest level of equipment utilisation and compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with production and operations teams to minimise downtime and disruptions.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical and hydraulic issues promptly.
  • Perform necessary repairs and maintenance to ensure optimal equipment functionality.
  • Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programmes to extend equipment lifespan and prevent breakdowns.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance equipment reliability and performance.
  • Maintain awareness of overall site compliance requirements and escalated issues as needed.
  • Manage and delegate tasks for reactive maintenance in response to equipment breakdowns.
  • Ensure reactive maintenance is coordinated with PPM and compliance schedules.
  • Manage risk assessments, safe systems of work, isolation processes and contractor/visitor management.
  • Foster a culture of safety within the maintenance team.
  • Lead and mentor a team of maintenance technicians, providing guidance, training and support.
  • Promote continuous improvement and high standards of work quality within the team.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, including repairs, inspections and upgrades.
  • Analyse maintenance data to identify trends, issues and opportunities for optimisation.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Proven engineering/maintenance experience, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Understanding of maintenance planning and scheduling.
  • Awareness of safety regulations and best practices in maintenance operations.
  • Proficiency in using maintenance planning software and tools.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical and hydraulic issues.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective time management and task prioritisation in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team of maintenance technicians.
  • Capable of developing and implementing effective preventive maintenance programmes.
  • Experience with continuous improvement methodologies is a plus.
