Job Description

Launched in 2016, Hayu is the first all-reality subscription video-on-demand service of its kind - available in 40+ markets globally including the UK, Ireland, Australia, Nordics, Canada, Benelux, and Singapore on a full array of devices (mobile, tablet, laptop & connected TVs) and at www.hayu.com. Over 300 shows and over 10,000 episodes can be streamed or downloaded to watch-on-the-go, including The Real Housewives, Below Deck and Million Dollar Listing franchises. The majority of US shows debut on the service the same day as their US launch.

This role provides legal support to internal clients. The Legal & Business Affairs team’s responsibilities include the provision of legal advice to the Hayu business on any matters related to the distribution and marketing of the Hayu service including: (i) drafting and negotiation of agreements for software and technical services, commercial distribution, content acquisition, marketing and PR services, amongst others; and (ii) tracking regulatory developments (particularly consumer and audiovisual regulations) and its potential impact on Hayu. Whilst this role forms part of a small close-knit legal team, you will also benefit from the support and opportunities provided by the broader legal network within NBCUniversal.

Responsibilities

We’re looking for a professional, motivated and self-sufficient person who can deal with tasks responsibly, pragmatically, in accordance with instructions and often under time-pressure. Someone who enjoys working outside of their comfort zone and is not afraid to ask questions.

Your responsibilities will vary but may include:

  • Drafting and negotiating agreements for software, digital technology and technical services, and working with the NBCU Privacy team to ensure such tech/services are implemented in line with applicable privacy laws;
  • Overseeing the legal support work provided to the marketing team (e.g. agency and sponsorship agreements, competitions, fan and influencer events), and supporting on the more complex initiatives;
  • Providing legal support to the business in relation to strategic initiatives (e.g. price increases, new product features) and clearly communicating any potential legal implications;
  • Drafting and negotiating agreements with Hayu’s commercial distribution partners (including MVPDs, device manufacturers and OTT services);
  • Attending routine meetings with internal clients, as well as getting involved with the meetings and events of the wider NBCU legal team

Qualifications

Skills & Experience

  • 5 years + PQE lawyer (UK qualified) with a good grounding in commercial law, likely gained in a private practice or in-house role
  • Experience of drafting and negotiating agreements for digital technology (such as marketing tech, software and services agreements) including an understanding of potential privacy issues.
  • Ideally some experience in marketing and/or consumer law
  • Strong drafting and contract negotiation experience
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Concise and efficient written and communication skills
  • Proactive, clear thinker, able to prioritise and manage a broad and fast-moving workload
  • Ability and willingness to develop good working relationships with employees and clients within our Legal and Business Affairs team and across the commercial business
  • Computer literate with experience in using Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Understanding of AI and its legal implications also a bonus
