Job description

Stantec's market-leading Environmental Services group supports clients in the environmental, geotechnical, and water sectors. We work with businesses and water companies across the UK and occasionally internationally.

You will join a friendly team of over 80 Hydrologists, Hydrogeologists, Water Resources Planners and Water Quality Scientists as part of our wider Water Environment Team. These team projects include enhancing the resilience of the public water supply and reducing the impact of wastewater treatment infrastructure on the water environment, with opportunities to contribute to flood risk modelling, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) Modelling, and nature-based solutions.

A
s a Senior Hydrologist / Hydraulic Modeller, your project work will likely cover areas including:

  • Flood hydrology and hydraulic modelling studies incorporating the impact of climate change.
  • Completion of Flood Risk Assessments to support planning applications.
  • Low flow assessments and water systems modelling to define the availability of water for supply during droughts.
  • Design and test nature-based solutions to assist with flooding and water quality improvements.
  • Climate change risk assessments of assets or portfolios of assets.

You will be expected to have responsibility for:

  • Delivering water resource management, hydrological and hydraulic Modelling, drainage and flood mitigation, and climate impact assessment projects.
  • Managing projects and maintaining client relationships.
  • Assisting with winning work and the development of new business within the water environment team.
  • Providing technical guidance, support and training to junior colleagues and assisting, where practicable, in the mentoring and development of others.

About YouYou will ideally have skills in hydraulic and hydrological Modelling, factual and interpretative reporting, data management, analysis, and presentation of results. You will hold a degree in a relevant subject, such as environmental science, civil engineering, geography, or another related discipline with a strong hydrology or hydraulics focus. You should have several years’ experience in hydrology, flood risk and/or drainage, with a preference for a consultancy background.

In particular, you should be able to demonstrate significant technical experience in some or several of the following areas:

  • Preparation of Flood Risk Assessments.
  • Hydraulic Modelling linked 1D-2D modelling packages, e.g. Flood Modeller-TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, MIKE FLOOD, InfoWorks ICM. Completion of fluvial, pluvial and tidal hydraulic modelling projects and the selection and design of flood protection systems.
  • Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) – principals and design (e.g. using WinDes MicroDrainage or Causeway Flow) and green-blue infrastructure planning,
  • Hydrological Modelling through the application of the FEH methods to estimate peak river flows and flood hydrographs using ReFH2 and WINFAP modelling packages.
  • Working with hydrometric data, analysis of gauging station flow and level records, interpretation and development of ratings curves for gauging stations. Calibration of rainfall-runoff models to match observed rainfall data to gauged flow data
  • Low flow studies/droughts assessments.
  • Environmental Impact Assessments – water resources and quality, drainage, flood risk, Water Framework Directive assessments.
  • GIS software (QGIS/ARC), coding (e.g. Python) and database management will also be a valuable asset.
  • Chartered (or near Chartership) with an appropriate professional body.
  • Managing, training and mentoring junior staff.

In addition, some experience in the following areas would also be a distinct advantage:

  • Water quality assessments and Modelling (including sediment transport).
  • Quarry or Mining Specific FRAs/FCAs.

  • Integrated Catchment Management – i.e. to achieve flood risk and water quality benefits.
  • Climate change impact assessment and adaptation planning.
