Senior Healthcare Assistant, A&E

This key role is central to delivering high quality patient care with compassion. The care you provide will make a real difference to patients and their carers and relatives.

Main duties of the job
  • Your role as a Health Care Assistant (HCA) is to work alongside registered nurse as part of the ward or department team to provide care to patients.
  • Washing and dressing patients, serving patients' meals, assisting with feeding patients when necessary, helping people to mobilise, assisting patients with toileting, bed‑making, generally assisting with patients' overall comfort, monitoring patients' conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respirations and weight.
  • Acting with compassion you will put patients at the centre of all you do.
  • You will communicate effectively with patients and their carers.
  • This role will require you to work variable hours on a rota including nights and weekends.
  • You will show courage by embracing new ways of working and doing the right thing by the people you care for, including speaking up when you have concerns.
  • You will assist with the cleaning and stocking within the Emergency Department.

Job responsibilities
  • Assist with washing and dressing patients, using hoists as appropriate.
  • Assist with serving meals and feeding patients, including reporting on intake and recording on charts as appropriate.
  • Assist with toileting, escorting patients to and from the lavatory and recording outputs where necessary.
  • Assist the qualified nurses with NEWS 2 vital sign monitoring and escalate appropriately.
  • Undertake venepuncture, cannulation, blood glucose and ECG training to assist with the registered nurses.
  • Work within the minor injuries unit and assist with minor dressings, eye washouts and applying plaster of Paris to fractures.
  • Assist with patient mobilisation, ensuring safe environment and using appropriate techniques.
  • Make beds and help to ensure the ward/department is kept clean, tidy and safe.
  • Communicate with patients and their relatives with care and compassion.
  • Help to ensure that patients are kept comfortable and receive personalised care.
  • Be involved in patient booking in / admission, introducing patients to ward / department area as directed by registered nurse.
  • Assist with the recording and safe keeping of patients' property and valuables.
  • Assist the multi professional team to prepare and support patients undergoing treatment and / or investigation maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
  • Safeguard vulnerable adults.
  • Complete all mandatory training required for your role and continuously maintain your compliance at 95% or above.
  • Report to the nurse in charge of the ward / department matters of concern relating to patients and the ward / department environment.
  • Undertake duties outside your working area (e.g. delivery and collection) to assist in maintaining good communication.
  • Ensure the privacy and dignity of patients is met at all times.
  • Be adaptable and flexible to working in various areas of the department or ward as required.

  • Basic standard of education including Maths and English; experience of working in a patient care setting or customer facing environment; Care certificate course or equivalent.
  • Basic IT knowledge/skills.
