Job description

On behalf of The Ministry of Justice, we are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer (Inside IR35) for a 6 month contract based Remote (with occasional site visits).

About the Role

Join the Justice Redact team at the Ministry of Justice to design and build both the backend and frontend of an AI-powered Personally Identifiable Information (PII) redaction Minimum Viable Product (MVP). You'll work alongside Full-Stack Developers, Data Scientists, a User Researcher, Product Lead, Delivery Manager, Subject Matter Experts and a Senior Interaction Designer.

The team's Data Scientists have already developed an early prototype and you'll work closely with them to ensure everything runs smoothly, securely and reliably from front-end to back-end. This project addresses a major challenge: meeting rising demand for data through Subject Access Requests (SARs), Freedom of Information (FOI) requests and other information-heavy use cases. Current workflows are manual and fragmented, making it hard to meet strict legal deadlines and driving up costs. Your role will be pivotal in modernising these processes, improving efficiency and reducing operational risk across the department.

  • Automate deployments and infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
  • Contribute to system design discussions, prioritising performance, security and sustainability
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines, observability, alerting and monitoring solutions
  • Use containerisation (Docker & Kubernetes) and AWS services (RDS, S3, SQS) to deliver scalable solutions
  • Build tools and services to improve operational efficiency and developer workflows
  • Collaborate with internal teams to design, create and maintain software
  • Work in Agile sprints to deliver MVP functionality and validate product concepts
Essential Qualifications
  • Expert in containerisation and minimal operating systems
  • Strong experience with Docker, Kubernetes and AWS
  • Skilled in IaC, CI/CD and DevOps best practices
  • Ability to implement effective monitoring, alerting and observability solutions
