The Leeds Emergency Medicine Departments offer 12-month Clinical Fellowships designed to provide individually tailored experience and training for those who want to develop a special interest in specific areas of Emergency Medicine. Fellowship posts are available from ASAP/ February 2026 onwards. The post holders will be working at 60/40 clinical to non-clinical split of total contracted time. There will be funding available for attending relevant external courses. The posts are offered on a fixed term contract for 6 months up to 12 months in the first instance. The post holder must be registered with GMC and hold a license to practice.
Responsibilities
- The post holder will be responsible for delivering care to patients within the Emergency Departments at the Leeds General Infirmary and St James University Hospital.
- The posts are adaptable to suit the candidate's areas of interest - candidates will be supported in developing a new service that supports the wider emergency needs of the patients in Leeds.
- Leeds teaching hospital is a major trauma center and has been successful in delivering training to specialist trainees in emergency medicine and has also run a successful junior clinical fellow and a senior clinical fellow program over the years. This being new posts allows the candidate to tailor the non-clinical time to further develop their skills in emergency medicine and work towards a non-clinical portfolio.
- As the Senior Clinical Fellow in Postgraduate Education, you will have dedicated non-clinical time to pursue activities related to postgraduate education, training and supervision. You will work alongside the department's college tutors to develop and maintain a positive learning environment for clinicians working in the department. There will be opportunities to get involved in junior doctor teaching, senior teaching, simulation, induction, FOAM-ed and trainee wellbeing. You will be supported to develop your own educational skill set including teaching and curriculum development. A study budget is available and you will be supported to pursue a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education or other relevant course.
- As the Senior Clinical Fellow in Undergraduate Education, you will have dedicated non-clinical time for the delivery of scheduled undergraduate education for over 100 senior medical students each year. You will work with the department's Undergraduate tutor to maintain the learning environment and to support the development of students' capabilities in performance and practice. You will teach, support and mentor students on the shop floor, in the classroom and in a simulated clinical environment. There is also the opportunity to be formally involved in university summative assessment processes. This fellowship prioritises support for you to transform your own capabilities relating to educational theory, feedback practice, simulation and teaching skills.
- Major Trauma: 40% of the post is dedicated to trauma-based non-clinical activities. Activities have included work on developing a chest drain proforma for pneumothoraces requiring a drain, local and international trauma education, and attendance at weekly trauma morbidity and mortality meetings. The post may involve taking on a more active role in reviewing and presenting cases. The trauma fellow participates in the monthly trauma simulation and develops as a trauma team leader with SIM involvement and other non-clinical projects.
- Ultrasound: Non-clinical time will support development of ultrasound skills and lead department and undergraduate ultrasound courses.

- This post will allow you to work with an enthusiastic group of consultants with a keen interest in simulation. Responsibilities include coordinating an embedded weekly in situ simulation program across both of our adult departments, running a wide variety of simulations covering all EM presentations including monthly interprofessional trauma team simulations. An interest in human factors and non-technical skills is beneficial.
- During your time, opportunities to develop skills as simulation faculty with locally run courses and ongoing feedback at each simulation. You will empower junior and interprofessional colleagues to work alongside you.
- Postgraduate Medical Education: dedicated non-clinical time to pursue activities related to postgraduate education, training and supervision; work with college tutors; opportunities in junior doctor teaching, senior teaching, simulation, induction, FOAM-ed and trainee wellbeing. Support to develop educational skills and pursue a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education or other relevant course.

Level of Responsibility
The appointee must have experience in Emergency Medicine and in related specialties (ACCS, T&O, surgery, pediatrics). Applicants must provide GMC status and license to practice at start. Ideally, the candidate will have MCEM/FRCEM intermediate or equivalent. The appointee must demonstrate ability to work at CT3 or higher. The posts are offered on a fixed term contract for up to 12 months in the first instance.
Duties of the Post
Senior Clinical Fellows work with HSTs in Emergency Medicine and Staff Grade doctors on a tier two rota. Fellows work across both sites and all departments. Up to 60% training time may be allocated (OOPT). If applying for out of programme training, appropriate clinical/educational supervision and required assessments will be provided. Depending on experience, work on CT3 or HST rota with up to 16 hours of non-clinical duties for development of their special interests, plus contribution to education, governance and research programs including:
- Undergraduate education and support of medical students
- Postgraduate education delivery and development
- Delivery of simulation training
- Development of clinical guidelines for ED
- Clinical governance, quality improvement and audit

Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCEM or Equivalent
- Successful completion of CT3/ST3+
- GMC full registration and current licence to practise by start date
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Advanced Life Support Certificate from RCUK or equivalent by start date
Desirable
- Working towards FRCEM
- Higher academic qualification (MD/PhD) or equivalent

- 36 months after full GMC registration with evidence of foundation competences
