Job description
About Birkbeck

This opportunity comes at an exciting point in Birkbeck's history, as we recently celebrated our 200th anniversary. Founded in 1823 to give working Londoners and learners from non‑traditional backgrounds the chance of a university education, our mission remains unchanged as we enter the third century.

Birkbeck has always occupied a unique niche in the UK Higher Education landscape, and we remain different to other institutions to this day: We are a world‑class research and teaching institution with a tradition of providing higher education to people in work.

While most of our classes continue to take place in the evening, we have expanded our teaching options to give students greater flexibility in how, when, and where they learn. This includes introducing daytime sessions for selected programmes and implementing HyFlex technology, which enables students to fully participate in live teaching whether in the classroom or online.

During the day, Birkbeck serves as a hosting venue for students from other universities and third‑party conferences and events, making the campus busy from 9am to 9pm on weekdays, with events continuing throughout the weekend. Our security, campus experience team operates 24/7, 365 days a year, delivering not only safety and vigilance but also exceptional customer service to all our customers.

Role overview

The successful candidate will have a strong track record of hands‑on management in a fast‑paced environment, working on their own initiative and providing expert advice regarding security matters. They will also play a key role in ensuring the University's compliance with the forthcoming Martyn's Law legislation.

This role would suit individuals with a track record in creating a culture of exceptional delivery and managing change. Strong communication skills will be essential as the role includes extensive partnerships with our neighbouring higher education institutions.
