Scientist II – Plate Test Development

As QuidelOrtho continues to grow, we are seeking to appoint a Scientist II – Plate Test Development to join our Research & Development department in Pencoed on a 2‑year fixed term contract basis. This role will work a standard day’s shift pattern.

About QuidelOrtho, Pencoed

QuidelOrtho has been manufacturing products in South Wales for over 40 years. Our state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing facility, based in Pencoed, employs over 600 people who are involved in the manufacture and supply of clinical laboratory and immunohematology products to sites across the globe.

Our Pencoed team manufacture a large menu of immunohematology products used in transfusion medicine; in addition to a large menu of immunoassay products encompassing a range of disease categories.

On site we have a range of functions operating globally & locally. All our employees are working towards one common goal, to help save and improve lives through diagnostics.

Your new role:

As the Scientist II, reporting to the Plate Test Development lead, you will be in a lab‑based role focused on providing technical support within a project team. You will learn to use various analytical and investigational tools to perform hands‑on practical work. This role involves interpreting and analysing scientific data, documenting findings in reports, and occasionally presenting results. A key responsibility is ensuring the lab operates in compliance with all quality and safety systems, including maintaining a good laboratory practice (GLP) environment.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Working closely with the Plate Test Development lead, you will be an integral part of our lab and project teams. Your key responsibilities will include:
  • Conducting hands‑on practical work using a variety of analytical techniques and instrumentation.
  • Performing interpretation and analysis of scientific data.
  • Ensuring the lab operates in full compliance with all relevant quality, safety, and documentation protocols.
  • Completing Plate Test Development activities and maintaining a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) environment.
  • Using VITROS analysers, investigational tools (QIC tools), and statistical software like Minitab.
  • Generating clear and accurate reports to document all completed work.
What You’ll Need to Succeed:
  • We're looking for someone with a strong scientific background and a desire to learn.
  • A degree in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting, with strong practical skills and the ability to accurately record experimental work and analyse data.
  • Proficiency with statistical tools, such as Minitab.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to manage your time effectively and adapt to changing priorities.
  • An understanding of immunodiagnostic/immunohematology principles is a plus.
