GCSE Science Tutor – SEMH & Alternative Provision Focus
Connex Education is recruiting committed and caring GCSE Science Tutors to work with young people who are currently unable to access mainstream education due to SEMH (Social, Emotional & Mental Health) needs.
This is a highly rewarding one-to-one tuition role where you’ll have the flexibility to deliver tailored GCSE Science lessons, while also offering informal mentoring and emotional support. You’ll play a vital role in helping disengaged learners build confidence, resilience, and achieve academic milestones.
Whether you’re an experienced teacher or have a strong background in tutoring and youth support, this role is perfect for those who want to make a lasting difference.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver GCSE-level Science tuition (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) tailored to individual learning styles and abilities.
- Adapt your approach to support students with Autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other SEMH-related challenges.
- Build positive, mentoring-style relationships that foster trust, emotional growth, and engagement.
- Support both academic progress and personal development, helping students gain confidence and self-belief.
- Manage your own caseload, including planning sessions and maintaining progress records.
- Liaise regularly with families, carers, and professionals to support a consistent approach.
- Keep detailed logs of attendance, lesson content, engagement, and student progress.
- Uphold safeguarding and health & safety procedures at all times.
- Be proactive and flexible, adjusting strategies to meet changing needs.
What We’re Looking For
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent (including experienced tutors, HLTA, or unqualified teachers with strong subject knowledge).
- Proven ability to teach GCSE Science across at least one discipline (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics).
- Experience working with students who have SEMH needs, ideally in a tuition, mentoring, or alternative provision setting.
- Strong rapport-building and mentoring skills—patient, compassionate, and non-judgemental.
- Experience in youth work, support work, mental health services, or similar roles is highly advantageous.
- Able to work independently and manage your own planning, delivery, and time effectively.
- Valid Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply).
- Full UK driving licence and access to a car (preferred but not essential).
What We Offer
- A meaningful role where your teaching and support can transform lives.
- Flexibility to manage your own caseload and schedule.
- Regular tuition referrals from local authorities and alternative provisions.
- Access to CPD, safeguarding support, and professional development.
- Ongoing support from Connex’s dedicated SEND and tuition teams.
Start Date: Immediate | Ongoing throughout the academic year
Drivers preferred, due to travel between tuition locations
