Job Title: School Caretaker
Job Summary
The School Caretaker is responsible for ensuring the school premises are safe, clean, secure, and well-maintained. This role supports the day-to-day operations of the school by carrying out maintenance tasks, overseeing site security, and contributing to a positive learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Site Security & Safety
- Open and close the school buildings, ensuring all areas are secure.
- Monitor the security of the site, including alarms, gates, and CCTV (where applicable).
- Conduct regular health and safety checks, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, and risk assessments.
- Respond to emergencies such as break-ins, leaks, or power outages.
Maintenance & Repairs
- Carry out basic repairs, DIY tasks, and routine maintenance (plumbing, minor electrical, carpentry, etc.).
- Report major maintenance issues to the appropriate contractors or management.
- Oversee and coordinate external contractors working on site.
- Ensure pathways, entrances, and outdoor areas are safe and tidy (e.g., gritting in winter, clearing debris).
Cleaning & Upkeep
- Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of key areas as needed.
- Ensure cleaning supplies and equipment are stocked and properly stored.
- Support the cleaning team and cover cleaning duties when necessary.
Grounds Maintenance
- Maintain outdoor areas including playgrounds, sports fields, car parks, and green spaces.
- Operate groundskeeping equipment such as mowers and strimmers (if required).
Logistics & Support
- Set up rooms for school activities, meetings, and events (e.g., moving furniture, arranging equipment).
- Assist with deliveries, including receiving and distributing goods across the site.
- Manage waste disposal and recycling.
Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities, or a similar role (preferred).
- Basic knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, electrical, or DIY repairs.
- Strong understanding of health, safety, and safeguarding procedures.
- Good communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Physical fitness and ability to carry out manual tasks.
- Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends.
