Position Statement:

Under the supervision of the Respiratory Care Medical Director, the Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing Respiratory Care in accordance with specific physician’s orders, department policies and procedures and the Vermont State Licensure Act.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Reviews patient chart and verifies physician orders.
  • Identify and greet patients professionally and in a friendly manner explaining goals, treatment procedures, diagnostic tests and any equipment used.
  • Conducts and charts all pertinent patient information on ordered treatments and procedures such as medical gas therapy, small volume nebulization with and without pharmacologic agents, metered dose inhalers, hyperinflation therapy (IS/PEP), bronchial hygiene therapy (CPPD, Cough assist, Flutter valve, Acapella, CPT vest, etc.). Participates in discharge planning meetings and patient education related to disease management.
  • Performs arterial punctures for blood gas analysis, then runs the sample, understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure. Understands ABG interpretation.
  • Responsible for supervision of respiratory care students and respiratory care assistants.
  • Cleans respiratory therapy equipment and transports to central supply for processing.
  • Provides airway management and mechanical ventilation during ambulance transports to other medical facilities when available.
  • Responsible for airway management during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Participates on Rapid Response Team.
  • Sets up and manages mechanical ventilators. Performs the associated critical care duties required for mechanical ventilation and documents activities such as airway management, endotracheal suctioning, ABG’s, and weaning parameters.
  • Makes in‑house rounds, checking equipment (ventilators/BiPAPs, HFOT, end‑tidal CO₂ monitors on crash carts and supply areas – restock as necessary) on a timely basis. Performs preventive maintenance and refers equipment for service if needed. Re-supplies and calibrates mechanical ventilators and ensures readiness.
  • Applies event monitors, if applicable and time allows.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care as an RRT, three years of clinical experience preferred.
  • Must hold and maintain a Vermont State License to practice respiratory care.
  • BCLS certification
  • ACLS certification or acquired within 12 months of employment
  • PALS certification or acquired within 12 months of employment
  • NRP certification or acquired within 12 months of employment
