The Registered Professional Nurse (RN) is tasked with providing and supervising both direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities to identified age-specific groups. This role demands the effective use of the nursing process, which includes assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating, to achieve the goals of the nursing department. An RN must demonstrate substantial specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skill based on applied practices of psychological, biological, physical, and social sciences. This encompasses a wide array of duties such as the observation, assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation of care; health teaching and counseling of the ill, injured, or infirmed; promotion of wellness, maintenance of health, prevention of illness, and the administration of medication and treatments as prescribed or authorized by duly licensed practitioners. Moreover, this position involves the supervision and teaching of other personnel in the theory and performance of these acts, requiring leadership and direction when working with a group of caregivers. The RN is also responsible for the day-to-day management and supervision of related clinical activities and for utilizing both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment. The primary function is the delivery of competent, compassionate, and cost-effective nursing care through the nursing process in the direction and administration of the medical and nursing plan of care, in compliance with established policies, procedures, and protocols. Additionally, the RN is responsible for managing the care of assigned patients, guiding and directing the activities of ancillary staff, and may function as a charge nurse. This role requires active participation in outstanding customer service and the maintenance of relationships that are equally respectful to all, adhering to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.
