Job summary

NHS Professionals in Bracknell is seeking a Receptionist to support outpatient services. You will greet patients, manage appointments, and handle calls, ensuring smooth clinic flow and accurate record handling.

The role requires NHS experience or relevant reception work, with 30 hours per week Mon–Thu, 8:30am–4:30pm. Temporary for 6 weeks, with potential for permanency within the NHS Trust.

Qualifications

  • Vocational Level 3 qualification or 2 years relevant experience.
  • Experience in outpatient/clinic reception is desirable.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel; accurate data handling.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and visitors, maintaining a friendly, professional environment.
  • Prepare notes for outpatient appointments and verify referral letters.
  • Handle calls, take action, and liaise with staff across the department.
  • Identify and obtain medical records and X‑rays as needed.
  • Check patients in/out using the Trust IT system and book follow‑ups.
  • Maintain a safe, organised work area and manage clerical tasks.
  • Arrange transport or interpreters as required.

Job Title: Receptionist

Location: Bracknell Health space Eastern Gate, Brants Bridge, Bracknell, RG12 9RT

Hours: 30 hours per week - Monday - Thursday 8.30am - 4.30pm

Trust: Royal Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Role type: Temporary for 6 weeks with possibility of becoming permanent

Role details

The receptionist will have the ability to perform complex administrative functions and will be responsible for receiving patients and visitors attending outpatient clinics taking ownership of escalated administrative issues where appropriate. The receptionist works in close partnership with medical, nursing and secretarial staff to ensure the smooth running of the outpatients department.

This role may require you to show evidence of vocational level 3 qualification or at least 2 years relevant experience.

Duties & responsibilities
  • To act as receptionist at the clinic; to promote a businesslike, but friendly and supportive role to all visitors and patients attending the unit.
  • Preparation of hospital notes for outpatient appointments and ensuring that referral letters are available for the appointment.
  • To receive phone calls to the unit; to take initial action; to liaise with other staff within the Department and Trust as appropriate.
  • To identify and obtain medical records and/or X-rays, as appropriate, for patients attending the various clinics, to liaise with other departments and other hospitals to facilitate this.
  • To check patients in and out of clinics using the Trust IT system.
  • Responsible for making follow-up clinic appointments and informing the patient of this verbally and in writing.
  • Responsible for keeping the work environment safe and organised.
  • Booking transport and/or interpreters for patients where required.
  • To assist with the administrative running of the department, ordering of stationery, photocopying, filing and other general clerical tasks as required.
You’ll learn the following whilst working at the trust:
  1. An in depth understanding of the roles and responsibilities involved in working within the NHS.
  2. Knowledge of the systems used, to effectively complete your role to the highest standard at all times.
  3. A sense of teamwork, gained through working alongside and supporting colleagues from all levels, within the organisation.
You’ll have the following skills/experience
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own workload and that of the service on a daily basis, working mainly without supervision and using own initiative.
  • NHS experience (desired)
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Reliable and organised paying attention to detail, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Reception experience.
