This role is physically demanding and may be carried out in remote settings. You’ll work outdoors on rugged terrain using machinery and equipment, both in teams and alone.

You will be based in the Countryside team at Colby Estate, working 8 am–4 pm. Weekends, bank holidays, evenings and on-call duties may be required.

The Welsh translation of the advert is available in the attachments.

What you'll be doing
  • Protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery.
  • Pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage visitors to love the area.
  • Engage visitors in conversation, answering their questions, and fostering appreciation.
  • Ensure conservation work and outdoor experiences meet the highest standards.
  • Liaise with farm tenants, partners, and volunteers, recognising their importance to our work.

Your primary responsibilities will cover the Colby estate (450 ha of farmland, woodland and coast) and the Carmarthenshire Coastal properties (365 ha of in‑hand and tenanted land).

Who we're looking for
  • Carrying out physical tasks to protect and improve land, habitats, and access.
  • Helping visitors understand and enjoy the place and its conservation work.
  • Following safety procedures and helping others stay safe.
  • Working well with colleagues and supporting volunteers.
  • Organising work and using tools, time and materials responsibly.
  • Helping the property run well and support its long‑term future.
Additional criteria for all other applicants
  • Practical experience in conservation work, protecting and improving habitats and landscapes.
  • Happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters.
  • Hard‑working and willing to learn.
  • Able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines.
  • Experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors.
  • Able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates.
  • A driver with a full UK driving licence.
Benefits
  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% of basic salary.
  • Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18).
  • Rental deposit loan scheme.
  • Season ticket loan.
  • EV car lease scheme.
  • Perks at work discounts such as gym memberships, shopping discount codes, cinema discounts.
  • Holiday allowance up to 32 days relating to length of service, plus holiday purchase scheme, subject to meeting minimum criteria.
  • Flexible working whenever possible.
  • Employee assistance programme.
  • Free parking at most Trust places.
