Public Involvement Adviser

We are looking for a passionate and committed public involvement and engagement specialists to join our People and communities team. Come and help us ensure that the voices of people with lived experience, their carers, families, and the voluntary and community sectors organisations that support them inform and influence the recommendations NICE makes.

We have one permanent role and one fixed term role (until 31 March 2027) available.

Main duties of the job

The public involvement advisers will join a passionate and experienced team, working on a portfolio of activities to engage and involve people and communities in the development of NICE guidelines, medicines appraisals and healthtech evaluations.

The public involvement advisers are responsible for identifying and supporting people who use health and social care services, carers and the public, and organisations representing their interests, in a range of NICE guidance. This includes project managing stakeholder engagement, lay member recruitment and support, and providing advice and training to various audiences. They will also contribute to the strategic development and promotion of patient and public involvement at NICE.

The public involvement advisers will play an integral part in delivering programmes of work to support our 3-year strategy for involving and engaging people and communities at NICE. They will also play a key role in supporting NICE's broader transformational aims and strategy.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Postgraduate diploma or equivalent qualification, or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through experience and further training/development, ideally in health/social science research and/or health policy work
Experience
  • Proven operational involvement in the management of complex projects involving professionals and people with lived experience working together
  • Experience in working with a range of individuals and organisations, including patient/voluntary and community sector organisations, ideally in a healthcare setting
  • Experience of working directly with people and communities affected by health inequalities
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of UK health policy, including involvement and engagement policies, principles, methods and practice, underpinned by theoretical knowledge or relevant practical experience
  • A good understanding of the range and roles of organisations representing the interests of people who use health and social care services, carers and the public
Skills
  • Diplomacy, assertiveness and confident negotiation skills, and the ability to deliver contentious information in a sensitive manner, sometimes in hostile situations
