About the role

Project Engineer (Cabling)

Power Transmission & Distribution – BTNO Project

Location: BTNO Project Office, A134 Colchester Road, Assington, Suffolk, CO10 5LX

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Project Engineer (Cabling) to join our Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team, working on the BTNO Project. This is a key delivery role supporting the Project Manager / Project Director and wider project team, with accountability for the successful planning, design, delivery, monitoring, commissioning and close‑out of cabling works. You will play a central role in developing engineered delivery solutions and leading site teams to ensure works are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.

What you’ll be doing
  • Lead and attend project reviews / project meetings
  • Have an awareness of the Digital Briefcase
  • Maintain accurate project records (progress, daily diaries, etc.)
  • Prepare both internal/external reports and liaise with stakeholders
  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm & keep up to date with changes in legislation
  • Responsible for the safety and welfare of the general public, employees and supply chain
  • Carry out Safety & Environmental Tours, promote observation and safety initiatives
  • Conduct and support Accident/Incident Investigations
  • Monitor effectiveness of the H&S Management System and implement improvement solutions
  • Write and review RAMS and accept subcontractor RAMS
  • Identify, raise and report risks and hazards
  • Ensure sufficiency and competency of workforce
  • Understand, control and issue safety documentation
  • Completion of audits
  • Setting people to work
  • Assist the Project Manager to lead risk/opportunity reviews, present the Risk Register and recommend/implement changes
  • Log and elevate any issues that cannot be resolved at delegated level of authority
  • Manage subcontractors, including monitoring contractor attendance and progress, providing direct instruction and support as necessary, ensuring contractual arrangements are achieved
  • Ensure procurement plans are available in line with overall project plans, and material/resources/supply chain activities are delivered to meet scheduled deadlines
  • Follow targets/KPI’s in line with project objectives and monitor performance
  • Ensure assurance activities (audits) are undertaken and take appropriate action on findings
  • Contribute towards workshops covering the principles of continuous improvement
  • Help develop, implement and periodically update resource‑loaded schedules
  • Ensure team adopts productivity and project controls techniques
  • Monitor progress and implement Short Interval Control processes / hold weekly meetings
  • Ensure operational milestones reflect master schedule and customer expectations
  • Ensure expenditure is in line with the budget and resources are used efficiently to enable cost control
  • Identify elements for cost recovery from others
  • Incorporate and balance operational and commercial constraints into decision making
  • Analyse, appraise and implement CEs
  • Own the Budget
  • Understand the contract and commercial impact
  • Manage commercial change
  • Request plant and materials
  • Motivate and empower the team using available resources through training, mentoring and performance management
Who we’re looking for
  • Organised, innovative and creative Project Engineer with knowledge and experience of working on Projects and proficient commercial/project management communications
  • Experience implementing safe systems of work
  • Experience managing risks and change processes through solutions‑based approach to problem solving
  • Good interpersonal skills enabling development of working relationships at all levels, negotiating and influencing
  • Communicate new concepts and ideas competently and with confidence

The role holder is likely to have one or more of the following:

  • Holds or is working towards a formal qualification in construction/engineering or equivalent industry experience
  • Holds or is working towards either the APM PFQ/PMQ
  • Holds CSCS and SMSTS or equivalent
