A family in southern New Jersey seeks a dedicated private tutor for their compassionate 14-year-old daughter entering 9th grade. The tutor should be experienced in the American high school curriculum and able to create a supportive and engaging learning environment tailored to the student’s needs and interests. Flexibility with hours and travel is required, and accommodation will be provided.
The family of a compassionate, intelligent young lady (14) seeks an exceptional homeschooling Tutor with a breadth of subject knowledge. The role starts as soon as possible, is based in southern New Jersey and will involve some travel.
Currently entering 9th grade, the student is the youngest of three children, with two older brothers who have finished university. She is kind-hearted, sociable, and easily picks up new ideas in conversation. She has attended traditional American schools so far, but in recent years, she has faced difficulties with anxiety. As a result, she has missed a good deal of school time.
The student’s hobbies include golf, boxing, and cosmetology. She has been training for boxing for some time now, although typically that training is for technique and physical fitness. She has not yet started sparring. Her father has a parallel affection for jujitsu, and she enjoys the fact that they participate in these martial sports. Golfing serves both fitness and leisure goals. She enjoys time on the golf course, and if she could start multiple mornings per week golfing nine holes, she would jump at the opportunity. She also enjoys makeup, hairdressing, and fashion, although these are more likely to continue as hobbies rather than to become career paths.
Academically, the student is very intelligent, but has faced challenges performing in a school environment primarily due to her anxiety. Due to absenteeism in past years, she missed out on substantial portions of math, science, and Spanish language classes. She has made much progress in coping with her anxieties, but they still pose a challenge to her from time to time. It is anticipated that the one-on-one context of homeschooling with an excellent private Tutor will ameliorate her anxieties surrounding academic work, and provide a comfortable environment in which she can explore and excel.
To date, the student has been enrolled in the standard US educational system, following a traditional path of study. The girl has a very high EQ and is very empathetic, understanding the thoughts and feelings of those around her. Her level of sensitivity may be one contributing factor to her anxiety challenges. She tends to reciprocate the energy of her surroundings: a positive energy environment will cause her to open up and be receptive to conversation and education, while a negative dynamic tends to cause her to close and lose interest.
The student responds well to kind and engaged teachers. Teachers who know how to stay on track to accomplish academic goals and minimize distractions inspire her to work hard and learn the material. It is especially important that the Tutor be easy-going and not overly strict, someone who is happy to be an educator.
The student will best be served by a Tutor who understands the importance of consistent academic progress, and who has the kindness and patience to explain concepts fully in an accessible way. Since she will be starting 9th grade a little late, the Tutor must create an organized and consistent environment of study to get on track for the school year while also avoiding the prospect of a boiler room of academic pressures. Keeping the right balance of lightheartedness and consistency will enable her to catch up in subjects in which she is weak, and energize her in subjects that might previously not have been her favorite. Beyond the academics, the Tutor should be personable, unpretentious and fun, and an excellent role-model.
Her parents seek a Tutor who will tailor resources and their delivery to address the girl’s specific learning needs. They must be able to use the local environment in order to enrich the educational experience, both in New Jersey and when the family travels to other locations. In New Jersey, the family owns a farm, a resource which could be used to teach biology, chemistry, mathematics, and related subjects. While traveling, the Tutor must research the local area in advance to provide educational opportunities. If they were to travel to Pompeii, Italy, for example, a combination lesson of classical history and vulcanology would enable the girl to understand multiple concepts at once.
The ideal Tutor will help the student pursue an asynchronous online school curriculum, which will serve as a basis upon which to build the student’s education. The Tutor will supplement her school curriculum, creating bespoke material and using mechanisms to encourage easier understanding. Her extracurricular and cocurricular interests should be integrated into the academic agenda to create a unified whole that serves as much of the student’s purview of interests as possible.
While the family do not necessarily favor a Tutor following a particular political ethos, they do expect their own beliefs and lifestyle to be respected. The Tutor should be discreet regarding their opinions and certainly not bring overly personal matters into the educational arena. When asked what languages the family use, they joked that they speak “English and sarcasm.” A Tutor with a good sense of humor is important.
Solid experience in teaching the American high school curriculum is paramount. The Tutor will be innovative in helping to break down and confront any difficulties and ultimately help the student to progress alongside or beyond her peers. At the end of her freshman year, a return to a traditional school environment should be possible - though it may be that homeschooling continues for all four years of high school. Either way, the Tutor must ensure that the student has reached at least appropriate grade level by the end of the 9th grade year.
The Tutor can expect the student’s parents to assist actively with the student’s education. They do not intend to micromanage her education, and of course the Tutor is free to direct educational activities, but her parents will always be ready to serve as a resource and help to support the student’s studies.
Hours and Holidays: The right teacher must be energetic and physically fit as they will spend up to 8 hours daily working with the student. They should expect up to 40 hours of contact time per week, with preparation in addition. They will be entitled to two consecutive days off per week, normally at the weekend, but they must understand the need to be flexible regarding the family’s travel plans and other commitments.
The Tutor will have a minimum of 9 weeks off per annum, to be taken at times agreed upon with the family. The Tutor will be flexible with respect to any changes in schedule and will adapt accordingly. The Client will try to give up to two weeks’ notice of any planned alterations.
The Client will provide a private, furnished residence within half an hour travel time to their home in New Jersey. The use of a car will be included, and it is likely that the Tutor may provide transportation to the student as needed.
The family have a bulldog and the farm will have livestock, so it is important for the Tutor to be comfortable around animals.
The Tutor must be a healthy non-smoker – active and energetic with a love for the outdoors; the kind of person who always makes the most of their environment to enhance teaching and learning opportunities.
