Job description

This is an opportunity for a Principal Engineer with approximately 15+ years of experience, wanting to join an engineering consultancy in a globally recognised Maritime team based in Brighton or Exeter.

Are you looking to be part of a growing team with the opportunity for growth or your next career step? Do you have a true passion to align business growth ambitions with the external world? This role will provide you the opportunity to drive our business agenda with a key focus on international shipyards and defence facilities.

Following continued success within the defence and international shipyard sectors, Haskoning are expanding their current Exeter and Brighton team through the growth of the maritime business.

About Haskoning

At Haskoning, you will join an independent, employee-owned international consultancy that combines engineering, design, and consultancy services with software and technology. Our mission, "Enhancing Society Together," drives us to create a positive impact on the world.

We offer purpose-driven and challenging work in diverse international projects, leveraging our 140+ years of expertise. With over 7,000 employees in more than twenty-five countries, we work together to turn challenges into opportunities and make a real impact on society.

Haskoning is an Equal Opportunities Employer. We have the clear goal of driving diversity and inclusion across all dimensions. Together, we are embarking on a journey where every one of us, individually and collectively, welcomes and celebrates individual differences. We recognise that embracing diversity unlocks innovation and creativity and fosters collaboration. We want our employees to reflect the diversity of our communities and the customers we serve.

About Our Maritime Business

Our global Maritime team are over six hundred strong and are at the forefront of innovative international maritime planning, design, and development. We are multi-disciplinary experts that work on international projects to create successful ports, shipyards, and maritime infrastructure worldwide. We have provided expert commercial, technical and operational advice and created master plans across the five continents for a wide range of port and shipyard projects.

We are one of the largest and most experienced teams of port planning, and shipyard and dry dock professionals and designers globally. We are world leaders in the production of port and shipyard feasibility studies, master plans, and designs. From our Maritime offices across the UK, we lead all the company’s Shipyard projects collaborating with colleagues globally.

Examples of recent projects include the design of a lock for a new port in India, the design of the newest, largest, and most technically advanced shipyard in the Middle East with three dry docks covering an area of over 1,000 hectares, above and below water assessment of a set of dock gates in the North East of England, and providing continuous significant support to our various UK Naval Bases.

The Role

If you are a Principal Civil/Structural marine engineer looking to work on globally significant projects, this role would provide you a step-up in the career ladder. This role will provide great exposure to local and global projects alike, whilst working with the leading professionals within the maritime and shipyard sector. The role is ideally wanting candidates with some knowledge of shipyards, drydocks and dock gates, but this experience is not essential.

The role will require you to use your technical and practical experience to develop engineering design solutions for maritime civil engineering structures in ports and shipyards, using steel, concrete, timber, and other materials to relevant design codes.

You will have engineering input in all project stages from inception, through design and construction, to demolition, recycling, and reuse.

Your technical and commercial experience, and liaison with multi-disciplinary teams will be vital to the success of the projects you work on.

This role is part of the growth of the Exeter and Brighton team. We offer hybrid working opportunities and are happy to discuss part time working arrangements.

Note, some of our clients require our staff to meet specific government Security Clearances before working on and having access to certain documents and projects, which will be a requirement of the job. We will pay for all necessary checks.

Job Responsibilities
  • Prepare designs and analyses for maritime and associated structures for ports and shipyards.
  • Produce design calculations, check, and review calculations produced by others.
  • Check and review models and drawings prior to issue.
  • Provide guidance to more junior staff including project managers, engineers, graduates, technicians, and admin staff working on your projects.
  • Work alongside your peers and the senior management team to develop continual improvements to our ways of working.
  • Prepare Bills of Quantities, Contract Documents and Specifications.
  • Undertake structural analyses and reporting.
  • Give presentations to client organisations and internal audiences.
  • Provide engineering judgment and advice.
  • Review (or prepare) study reports to a high standard of written English.
  • Provide commercial awareness of projects to deliver profitable results within programme by setting and agreeing expectations and achieving on-time delivery.
  • Project Manager for small and medium sized projects, or Technical Manager on large/complex projects.
  • Contribute to local, national, and international business development efforts through the production of proposals and interaction with clients. Participate in the development of new and existing client bases.
Desirable Skills and Experience
  • Analytical Ability – lead design and analysis work with limited support.
  • Conceptual Ability – capable of undertaking design from concept to ready for construction.
  • Communication Skills – clearly articulate orally and in writing the reasons behind your decisions. Show confidence in presenting to team members, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Client Orientation – understands the importance of the client’s perception of the organization. Maintain a professional client-facing approach.
  • Problem Solving – think laterally and develop solutions to problems with others and on your own.

  • Organised – show organisation, discipline, and a structured, consistent approach in the way you work.
  • Personable – approachable, relatable, and empathetic.
  • Responsible – Autonomy and responsibility to work without supervision.
  • Demonstrate experience in the development of port or shipyard infrastructure, such as heavy-duty quays, dry docks, or dock gates.
  • Demonstrate commitment to training of junior staff e.g. as Delegated Engineer or Supervising Civil Engineer within an ICE training scheme.
