My name is Valerie Dixon I am the Professional Lead - Education & Training Pharmacy Technician for the Pharmacy Department based at Woodpecker House, Hellesdon Hospital. I am privileged to be part of a very hardworking, friendly, and committed team of people in providing a Mental Health pharmacy service to patients within NSFT.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, hardworking and highly motivated person with a positive outlook to join our team, training towards the Certificate of Education in Pharmacy Technician Practice Apprenticeship.

The role is a 2-year, fixed term course, blending work and study through the UEA for the certificate, with the end goal of seeing you become a registered professional with the GPhC.

You will be based at Hellesdon Hospital initially in the dispensary which provides a high-quality pharmacy service. The dispensary currently supplies medication to a variety of wards including adult acute, dementia and complexity in later life, child and adolescent and forensic services.

All applicants must hold a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or grade C (or equivalent), including English, mathematics and at least one science subject

In place of English and maths GCSEs we may to consider Functional skills L2

To develop the skills and knowledge in all areas of hospital pharmacy practice required to become a Pharmacy Technicians

This will involve completion of the Pharmacy Technician certificate of higher education in pharmacy technician practice at the UEA

Main duties of the job

To complete a 2-year training and development apprenticeship under the supervision of a registered Pharmacy technician and or Pharmacist, in line with the requirements of the external training provider. This will include:

To undertake and complete the UEA training course which meets the requirements of the initial education and training standards for Pharmacy Technicians and has been accredited by the GPhC

To train and work in the designated areas within pharmacy, as set out in the training and development schedule, to complete the competencies required for each standard and area

To contribute to the provision of a range of pharmaceutical services including the following core duties: dispensing, medicine management, procurement, distribution, including ward top up services and medicine safety

To ensure all pharmacy duties are carried out in accordance with legal, ethical and professional guideline e.g. Code of Ethics for Pharmacy Technicians, COSHH regulations, Health & Safety regulations and following the pharmacy departments and Trust procedures to meet the needs of our patients and other health care professionals

Job responsibilities

The role is varied and requires flexibility in your approach to work and learning, working in both dispensary and stores and some ward work on the Hospital site.

The post holder will:

  • Manage the stores and pre-pack service of the pharmacy
  • Enter on the computer, generate orders, compile and supply ward stock items
  • Be lead for top-up services to allocated wards and departments
  • Dispense in-patient and out-patient prescriptions, discharge prescriptions and individual named-patient medications
  • Maintain hygiene, health and safety through performing routine housekeeping tasks in the pharmacy department
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics, English, and Science.
  • NVQ/BTEC Level 2 in Pharmacy Services
