Practitioner Psychologist/Psychotherapist

Are you passionate about improving the lives of older people and shaping dementia care with compassion and innovation? We're looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Practitioner Psychologist or Psychotherapist to work within our East and Exeter Older Peoples Community Mental Health Teams.

Primarily based in our Exmouth team, the role is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to multidisciplinary team working, delivering specialist psychological assessments and therapeutic interventions for older people with complex mental health needs, cognitive impairment, and dementia.

This role offers the opportunity to deliver trauma-informed interventions within a psychologically informed community setting, supporting individuals through collaborative formulation, relational practice, and reflective approaches.

You'd also be welcome to collaborate on a range of projects and contribute to supervision.

Main duties of the job

The Practitioner Psychologist/Psychotherapist provides specialist psychological assessment, formulation, and intervention for older people presenting with complex mental health needs, dementia, and cognitive impairment. Within the CMHT, they contribute to multidisciplinary care planning, risk assessment, and support for carers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering evidence-based psychological therapies tailored to older people
  • Developing collaborative formulations
  • Contributing to service development, audit, and clinical governance
  • Promoting parity of esteem and psychological thinking across the MDT

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering specialist psychological assessments and therapy
  • Providing consultation and supervision to MDT colleagues
  • Contributing to clinical placements for Trainee Psychologists and other Therapists
  • Engaging in peer supervision and service development

Job responsibilities

The principal purpose of the job is to improve thepsychological health & wellbeing of people within the post holdersspecialist field of practice.

This will be achieved in this post through undertaking thefollowing areas of responsibility:

  • Toensure the systematic provision of a high quality psychological service inspecialist field of practice, across identified locality area(s), as a keycomponent of integrated mental health and wellbeing services across DevonPartnership NHS Trust
  • Providing local clinical leadership,co-ordination and supervision for trainees and volunteers employed by orattached to the psychology service, under the general direction and supervisionof the Professional Lead
  • Carrying a specialist caseload ofclients, and providing advice and consultancy to patients,family members, carers and professionals.
  • The post holder will be supported bysenior colleagues within their specialist field. The post holder will beexpected to make good use of the expertise of others within the service tofurther develop their clinical skills with this client group.
  • To workautonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for thesystematic governance of psychological practice within the service / localteam.
  • The post holderwill receive regular professional and clinical supervision in accordance withTrust policy and Professional Practice Guidelines set out by the BritishPsychological Society or appropriate designated Professional Body.
  • Thepost holder will observe, and abide by all relevant Professional Codes ofConduct and Practise including the British Psychological Society or appropriate designated Professional Body.
  • The post holderwill be fully registered with the Health Professions Council or appropriatedesignated Professional Body as a condition of employment.
Person Specification
Experience
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a wide range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Experience, and/or training in diversity awareness and social inequality
  • Experience of working under supervision in secondary care adult mental health services
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
Knowledge and skills
  • Knowledge and familiarity of specialist services; and of the services in the NHS where psychology and psychological therapies is commonly applied.
  • An understanding of providing psychological therapy for service users presenting with Severe and Complex mental health problems.
  • Excellent verbal, nonverbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to integrate complex data; make highly skilled evaluations and decisions; and take a long term perspective.
  • Proven organisational, planning and time management skills
  • Calm, methodical approach, friendly but concise
  • Good communication skills when presenting / facilitating to varying groups of people
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative within a service consisting of a network of teams.
  • Ability to work as a member of a clinical team.
  • Ability to tolerate ambiguity, and maintain own morale and motivation in challenging service delivery contexts.
  • IT Skills
Qualifications
  • Qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist (DClinPsychol or equivalent) and registered with HCPC.
  • Psychological Therapists need to be trained to Masters level or equivalent, in a specific psychological therapy and registered with an appropriate recognised professional body e.g. UKCP, BABCP
  • Further training or experience in clinical specialism
  • Further training in related area
  • Further training in at least one (other) psychological therapy
