Practice Manager

Bridgewater, Somerset

£55k-£60k (DOE) + Benefits

Hours: 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day)

Location: Initially based at the surgery; flexible/condensed hours negotiable in time

Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Practice Manager to lead and oversee the day-to-day management of a well-established GP practice. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for ensuring the smooth, efficient, and profitable operation of the practice while supporting partners and staff to deliver high-quality patient services.

The successful candidate will manage all aspects of practice functionality including HR, finance, compliance, premises, IT, and operational performance. Through effective leadership and innovative ways of working, you will promote continuous improvement, staff engagement, and long-term sustainability.

Please note prior knowledge of CQC regulations and NHS compliance is welcome but not essential, as full support and learning will be provided.

Key Responsibilities
Operational & Strategic Management
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring staff fulfil their responsibilities effectively
  • Coordinate and lead internal projects and service developments
  • Support partners with operational advice and strategic planning
  • Prepare business cases for new or enhanced services
  • Keep up to date with developments and changes in primary care
People & HR Management
  • Lead all HR functions including recruitment, contracts, appraisals, performance management, and disciplinaries
  • Ensure compliance with employment law and best HR practice
  • Workforce planning to maintain an appropriate skill mix and training levels
  • Promote staff wellbeing, engagement, and effective communication
Team Structure & Leadership
  • Overall responsibility for approximately 30+ staff
  • Direct line management of 5 staff
  • Day-to-day by the Lead Nurse; reception team by the Reception Supervisor
Finance & Business Management
  • Manage financial processes including budgeting, forecasting, and financial record-keeping
  • Liaise with accountants to ensure timely year-end accounts
  • Oversee monthly payroll and pension submissions
  • Identify opportunities to maximise income and reduce expenditure
  • Ensure QOF and commissioned service targets are achieved
  • Profitability is the primary benchmark of success, reviewed annually with partners and accountants
Compliance, Governance & Risk
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with NHS and CQC requirements
  • Maintain and update practice policies and procedures
  • Oversee complaints, significant events, and risk management processes
  • Manage contracts, service agreements, and equipment maintenance
  • Coordinate business continuity and practice development plans
IT, Estates & Communications
  • Oversee IT systems and ensure DSPT compliance
  • Manage premises, facilities, health & safety, and risk assessments
  • Maintain accurate external communications, including website content
  • Support the Patient Participation Group (PPG)
  • Liaise with the Primary Care Network (PCN) and commissioners
Meetings & Governance
  • Facilitate meetings, prepare agendas, and maintain action plans
  • Ensure effective internal communication across all team
About You
  • Proven experience in a senior management or operational leadership role
  • Strong people management and organisational skills
  • Financial acumen with experience managing budgets and accounts
  • Ability to lead change and drive continuous improvement
  • Confident communicator with the ability to work collaboratively with clinical and non-clinical teams
  • Experience in healthcare or primary care is advantageous but not essential
