Physician Assistant - Emergency Department

This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center (HVAMC), under the Medicine Service Line. This position is aligned under the Emergency Department (ED).

Duties

The incumbent will be fully qualified and certified to function in a clinical, educational, and administrative role in accordance with the guidelines and policies of Hampton VAMC. This individual is delegated the authority and responsibility to assume clinical, consultation, educational, research and administrative duties and responsibilities related to the patients and staff of the ED.

  • a. Coordinates and supervises the delivery of care for ED patients including patient evaluation to include procedures included in Scope of Practice; orders appropriate medications, schedules follow-up as needed, appropriate referrals as needed.
  • b. Establishes a comprehensive plan of care based on clinical findings and standards of care. Establishes mutual goals with patient/family.
  • c. Prescribes medications based on patients' status, accepted scientific guidelines, prescriptive authority, and ongoing evaluation of therapies.
  • d. Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, including laboratory tests, and appropriate radiology studies.
  • e. Is proactive in identifying potential emergency/crisis situations and providing appropriate interventions.
Performs procedures within the approved scope of practice
  1. Performing diagnostic and stabilization procedures based on ACLS protocol.
  2. Performing procedures such as incision and drainage, joint aspiration, suturing.
  3. Screening patients to determine the need for hospital admission.
  4. Screening patients to determine the need for further health care including consultations.
  5. Ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies such as laboratory test, X-rays, electrocardiograms, PFT's, CT, MRI, stress testing, nuclear medicine studies.
  6. Ordering and/or starting IV solutions and medications.
  7. Ordering and/or inserting nasogastric suction catheters.
  8. Ordering or performing bladder catheterization.
  9. Ordering "one on one" status on patients with SI or at risk for elopement.
Work Schedule

Full-time; variable 10 hour shift 4 days a week to include holidays and weekends.
