Pharmacy Technician (Rotational Dispensary)

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals looking for a challenge to join our dynamic team of rotational Pharmacy Technicians in our busy dispensary service.

You will have an NVQ or equivalent in Pharmaceutical Science and be a registered Pharmacy Technician, or working towards gaining your qualification to enable registration. An Accuracy Checking validation would be desirable but in-house training is available.

Applicants from community Pharmacy are welcome as we\'ll provide a comprehensive induction and in-house training programme.

Main duties of the job

The role will be varied and challenging in a busy acute teaching hospital Trust. We\'re seeking enthusiastic Pharmacy Technicians with good attention to detail to help us deliver excellent patient-focused care. In our various hospital dispensary sites you\'ll deal with a wide range of medicines (including specialised or high-cost), supporting to advance your clinical skills and knowledge.

You will work as part of a team and participate in the provision of;

  • Timely and accurate dispensing and issuing of medication in accordance with professional and departmental procedures and standards.
  • Actively coordinate the work of a Pharmacy Dispensary to ensure a high quality and efficient service is provided.
  • Work with service users in a professional and efficient manner, dealing with either telephone or face-to-face enquiries from a wide range of staff groups, resolving where possible or referring appropriate queries to relevant members of the Pharmacy Dispensary team.
  • Support stock management in all areas of ordering, receiving, issuing and ensuring good stock maintenance in these areas. Participating in departmental stock-checks.
  • Assist with the training of new staff members and act as a professional role-model.
  • Adaptable and responsive to service needs which may require moving from one work area to another at short notice depending on service requirement.

Job responsibilities

Participate in departmental weekend, bank holiday and late duty working as required. In addition the post-holder will participate in a system of flexible shifts to facilitate NUH Pharmacy opening times.

The post-holder will rotate and work at either the Queens Medical Centre (QMC) or Nottingham City Hospital campus.

Person Specification
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the GPhc or will qualify/register within next 6 months

Experience
  • Previous Pharmacy experience to include receiving and dispensing prescriptions, using Pharmacy electronic systems for labelling and stock management, effective stock management, able to work in a productive team, work safely as an individual, general knowledge of commonly prescribed drugs and their uses
  • Experience within a hospital Pharmacy setting
  • Patient counselling experience
  • Dispensing of Controlled Drugs
  • Accuracy checking experience
  • Previous experience of automation
  • Clear and effective communicator, with good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills to include telephone, face to face and email contact with both staff colleagues and patients

Physical skills
  • Able to meet physical skills of role (sit-stand for long periods, lifting/bending/pushing, face to face contact with service users). There may be physical effort and long periods of standing in Dispensaries. Lifting, bending and stretching will be required frequently on a daily basis. There will be face to face contact with patients in this role which occasionally may be stressful and difficult.
  • Able to meet mental efforts of role (manage unpredictable workload, work with noise or distractions)
  • Computer literate with good general keyboard skills
Requirements specific to role
  • Participation in general Pharmacy Dispensary duties, including the 7 day shifted working rota and Bank Holidays rota
  • Cross-campus working
