Join a leading Financial Services organisation, with an enviable reputation for exceptional customer service, market leading persistency and award-winning customer and employee engagement.

  • Become accountable for our Personal Lines technical oversight – an area of the business that has seen impressive growth and is set to continue.
  • Hybrid working arrangements – be based out of our York or Bristol offices 40% of your week, with up to 60% home working on offer.
About the role

In this role you will be responsible for the technical expertise of our Regional Underwriters across our Personal Lines product range (known as Motor & Personal – M&P). NFU Mutual is looking to continue to evolve this area of our business, delivering a compelling customer proposition and experience – plus it's an exciting time to join as we implement a large-scale transformational change (including digital offering) programme.

The role holder will contribute to our Personal Lines underwriting strategy, becoming responsible for implementing this locally, whilst monitoring key account performance measures and setting technical standards. Working collaboratively with our Head Office teams and NFU Mutual tied Agents, you will be a referral point for the most complex risks, holding the most senior Underwriting authority in the Regional Team. You will also feed in market trends and analysis to enable the organisation to respond proactively, whilst also providing your technical opinion on policy wordings and product development to ensure our products remain competitive.

Leading a technical team of Senior technical Underwriters, you will work with them to drive the technical capability of our Regional Underwriters, enabling them to be intuitive with their approach and to maximise their contribution to business objectives.

About you

You will come from an established Personal Lines underwriting background with a demonstrable and in-depth understanding of this market. This will include prior experience dealing with complaints, escalations, and complex referrals, matched with knowledge of current industry developments and regulatory frameworks.

Technically minded with strong analytical skills, you will have the ability to interact with various stakeholders, including non-technical audiences, partnered with the credibility and confidence to really challenge and influence decisions and ways of working.

As a collaborative leader, you will have a track record of coaching and mentoring others, fostering talent, and driving high performance within your team. You will combine technical expertise with commercial awareness, ensuring underwriting decisions support both business objectives, good customer outcomes and long-term success.

Key criteria to highlight on your CV will be:

  • Demonstrable experience of undertaking a senior Underwriter or Underwriting managerial position(s) within a Personal Lines specialism.
  • Knowledge of dealing with complaints, escalations and complex referrals for Home & Motor, Reinsurance, Flood Re and Sum Insured Exposures (£5M+).
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and influencing skills.
  • Experience of delivering KPIs, projects and objectives.
  • Strong mentoring / managerial skills.

You must also be able to attend either our Bristol or York offices for 40% of your working week – i.e. minimum 2 days per week.

Benefits and Rewards
  • Salary – up to £70,000.
  • Annual bonus (up to 25% of salary).

  • 28 days annual leave + bank holidays + buy/sell/save holiday trading scheme.
  • A Family Friendly policy that helps you balance your work and family responsibilities.
