A care support organization in Leeds seeks a Personal Assistant to support a 12-year-old boy with Autism and related needs. The role involves personal care, supporting social activities, and ensuring safety while working flexible hours, primarily on weekends. Ideal candidates will have experience with children with Special Educational Needs and hold a full UK driving license.
A Personal Assistant (P.A.) is required in the Leeds area (Rothwell) to support a young boy aged 12 who has a diagnosis of Autism, social and communication difficulties, sensory processing needs, a knee problem affecting mobility, and ADHD, in accessing local community activities. He requires support with personal care needs, for example limited dietary intake (consistent with ARFID), following a plan to meet his nutritional needs, prompting with personal hygiene (reminders to shower, brush teeth, change clothing, wear deodorant, get hair cuts, etc.), guidance on wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for activity/weather, and assistance with maintaining emotional regulation. He is a happy verbal boy (selective mutism in certain situations) who enjoys gaming, music, dim lights, going to local parks (for racket sports), short walks, the cinema and the gym. He is interested in trying new social activities (e.g., museums, science museums) but prefers routine and may be reluctant to try new activities. He needs opportunities to socialise and make new friends, though he may not always agree with this need. He would like to try skiing. He must be closely supervised at all times due to running off, potential challenging behaviours, and limited sense of danger and road safety awareness.
He requires a P.A. for a total of 6 hours per week during term time and 8 hours per week during school holidays, worked flexibly on weekday evenings, but mostly to be required to work at weekends (Saturday). Working days can be flexible; however, he likes to have a routine, so punctuality and stability are essential. It needs to be flexible because he can become dysregulated when demands are placed upon him. He can struggle with transitions (he has a blue badge). Experience of working with children and with children, young people with Special Educational Needs (S.E.N.) is essential, including knowledge and strategies in areas such as thinking, understanding and learning, emotional and behavioural difficulties, speech, language and communication, sensory and/or physical difficulties.
