Job title: Property & Casualty Underwriter

Location: Glasgow – hybrid working (3 days in office)

PURPOSE OF ROLE

Lawes Recruitment is working on behalf of a leading insurer seeking a commercially astute and technically skilled Commercial Combined Underwriter to join their Glasgow team. This role plays a key part in delivering new business growth and underwriting profit by providing efficient case underwriting services and developing strong broker relationships. You will support the wider regional strategy, contribute to financial targets, and play a critical role in technical management of the commercial portfolio.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Underwrite new Property & Casualty business within agreed authority levels, adhering to risk appetite and technical guidelines
  • Follow a structured broker engagement model to identify, develop, and convert new business opportunities
  • Deliver against income, profit, and expense targets by managing performance to Key Performance Indicators
  • Build and maintain strong broker relationships to enhance local presence and market influence
  • Provide valuable commercial and technical market insights to support wider regional strategy
  • Collaborate with internal teams including claims and surveyors to ensure consistent and high-quality service
  • Support the continuous improvement of underwriting performance and client service standards

DAY-TO-DAY

  • Actively engage with brokers to underwrite new cases and explore growth opportunities
  • Negotiate terms confidently to secure profitable and competitive outcomes
  • Monitor personal and regional underwriting performance against financial and operational targets
  • Conduct broker visits to deepen relationships and identify areas for mutual growth
  • Share insights and updates with internal stakeholders to improve technical capability and service consistency
  • Maintain accurate underwriting records in compliance with regulatory and internal standards

EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in commercial underwriting, preferably focused on new business
  • Proven ability to build broker relationships and negotiate underwriting terms effectively
  • Track record of contributing to underwriting growth and achieving performance targets
  • Comfortable working within a matrix structure and collaborating across departments
  • Experience in accurately pricing risk while balancing commercial and compliance needs
  • Progression towards ACII or other relevant professional qualifications is preferred
  • Full clean driving licence is a must
