Job Summary
Are you an experienced, motivated nurse with a passion for high-quality care? We are looking for a dynamic band 6 Orthopaedic Pre‑assessment nurse to join our friendly and innovative team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in ensuring safe and effective care for patients preparing for orthopaedic surgery. You will work as a clinical expert, using advanced assessments and decision‑making skills to support patients throughout the pre‑operative process. Our nurse‑led team delivers pre‑operative assessment to orthopaedic patients and works closely with anesthetics and consultants.
This post may be offered as a Band 5 development role for suitable candidates who do not yet meet all the criteria for Band 6. In this case, we will support with a structured development plan and mentorship, with progression to Band 6 upon completion of agreed competencies and objectives.
Job Responsibilities
- Work within the Orthopaedic Liaison team (STORM and Orthopaedic Pre‑assessment) in a variety of roles, such as pre‑operative assessment.
- Assess elective orthopaedic surgery patients for fitness for surgery and refer to other agencies or medical teams as appropriate. Carry out medical clerking of the pre‑operative patients and nutritional assessment.
- Work within a team of staff responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating holistic, high‑quality, and individualized care that respects patient personal dignity and beliefs.
- Ensure all documentation is complete and accurate and that information is stored and maintained appropriately.
- Maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Identify and undertake initiatives to improve quality of patient care, developing the service.
- Ensure appropriate communication mechanisms are in place and promote and maintain effective communication within the service / multidisciplinary team, colleagues, patients, relatives, visitors, and between other departments.
- Collaborate with members of the multi‑disciplinary team within and outside the Trust.
- Empower patients, provide and promote health education and advise on the prevention of ill health.
- Act as the patient advocate when appropriate and ensure that nursing staff can offer guidance on treatment options to enable the patient to make an informed choice.
- Maintain a professional profile and develop skills, knowledge and competencies in accordance with the NMC code of Professional Conduct, Trust Policies and Procedures.
Person Specification
Essential
- Registered Nurse on Part 1 of the NMC Register with sound clinical knowledge and evidence of continuing professional development.
- Significant relevant orthopaedic experience and/or completion of the post‑registration orthopaedic course.
- Significant experience with elective orthopaedic pathways.
Desirable
- Diagnostic and consultation skills.
- Previous experience of patient pre‑assessments.
