Job description
Occupational Therapist – Learning Disabilities Team – Manchester City Council

We are currently looking for an experienced and confident Occupational Therapist to join the Learning Disabilities and Autism Team at Manchester City Council. This is a full‑time, contract role supporting adults with learning disabilities and/or autism living in supported accommodation, or those preparing to move into such settings. The role sits within the Principal OT Team and focuses on maximising independence, promoting safe care delivery, and enabling sustainable community living.

Responsibilities
  • Carrying out holistic, strengths‑based OT assessments for adults with learning disabilities and autism.
  • Reviewing existing care provision and support packages to ensure needs are appropriately met in supported living settings.
  • Providing specialist input around moving and handling, including risk assessments and carer training.
  • Recommending and facilitating equipment, adaptations, and assistive technology to enhance independence.
  • Advising on sensory and environmental strategies to manage behaviours that challenge.
  • Supporting transitions into or out of supported living accommodation based on individual needs and housing suitability.
  • Working collaboratively with Social Workers, LD Health Professionals, Housing teams, and families/carers.
  • Contributing to service development within the Moving & Handling Optimisation team.
Qualifications
  • Experience working as an Occupational Therapist in learning disabilities, autism, or similar adult social care settings.
  • Sound knowledge of moving and handling practices, risk assessments, and single‑handed care principles.
  • Confidence in managing behaviours that challenge using environmental and sensory approaches.
  • HCPC registration.
  • Enhanced DBS / CRB (we can obtain this for you).
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Recognised Occupational Therapy qualification.
  • Driving essential for this citywide role.
