Overview
Your responsibilities will include identifying and meeting each child's individual needs, supervising and supporting them throughout the day, and engaging in a variety of interactive activities such as reading stories, helping at mealtimes, playing games, and changing nappies. You will act as a positive and practical role model, build friendly and professional relationships with staff and parents, and ensure you fully understand and follow safeguarding procedures.
Responsibility Highlights
- Support babies and young children through a range of transitions and significant events, e.g., moving onto school, moving house or the birth of a sibling.
- Recognise when a child is in danger or at risk of serious harm or abuse, and explain the procedures to be followed to protect them. Types of abuse: domestic, neglect, physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
- Identify risks and hazards in the provision and during off‑site visits, related to children, staff and visitors, and follow reporting procedures.
- Practice infection control techniques for hand, food preparation and hygiene, deal safely with spillages, use correct personal protective equipment and safe disposal of waste.
- Use equipment, furniture and materials safely and securely, following manufacturer instructions and provision requirements.
- Encourage children to be aware of personal safety, develop personal hygiene practices including oral hygiene, and be aware of the safety of others.
- Promote health and wellbeing by encouraging healthy balanced nutrition, snacks and drinks appropriate for the child's age and by ensuring physical activity throughout the day, indoors and outdoors.
- Carry out respectful care routines appropriate to the child's developmental stage, dignity and needs, including feeding, weaning or complementary feeding, nappy changing, potty or toilet training, care of skin, teeth, hair, rest and sleep.
- Communicate with all children, including those with additional needs or whose first language is not English, using verbal and non‑verbal methods suitable to their level of understanding.
- Extend and support children’s development and learning through play, creativity, social development and learning activities, and clear up after activities.
- Observe children, assess, plan and record learning outcomes, and share results accurately and confidentially in line with statutory and provision requirements.
- Support early language development and early literacy skills such as mark making, writing, reading and being read to.
- Support early numeracy skills, including counting, number patterns, sorting and matching.
- Support the individual care and participation plans for each child, using a graduated approach to assessment, planning, implementation and review.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, other professionals and agencies to meet the needs of children and enable them to progress.
- Work alongside parents or carers, recognising their role in the child's health, well‑being, learning and development, and encouraging an active partnership.
Qualifications and Apprenticeship
- Working towards the Level 2 Early Years Practitioner apprenticeship standard.
- Knowledge, skills and behaviours required for Level 2 Early Years Practitioner qualification.
- Functional skills in Maths and English if required – GCSE or equivalent Maths & English (grade 3).
- Other relevant qualifications and industry experience accepted.
- Administrative, analytical, attention to detail, communication, creative, customer care, initiative, IT, logical, maths & English, non‑judgemental, number skills, patience, presentation, problem solving, team working skills.
