Job description
Overview

At Calderdale Council, we endeavour to support our communities in any way we can. This includes ensuring delivery of statutory services such as home to school transport for passengers with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We recognise the importance of maintaining a clean, safe and functional environment for our residents. This is a dual role providing driving and operative duties for Neighbourhood Services, including Minibus Attendant and Driver duties for Transport Services.

Responsibilities

Transport Services

  • Transport service users safely and in comfort in accordance with the daily schedule or as instructed by officers within Transport Services.
  • Ensure that all duties undertaken are in accordance with Council/Departmental policies, procedures, standards or statutory requirements, including equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice.

Neighbourhood Services

  • Provide an effective maintenance and improvement service for Calderdale’s Green Spaces and Street Scene, Bereavement Services, Parking Services, Community Protection Service and Waste Management Service.
  • Carry out routine maintenance, grass cutting and strimming, collect domestic waste, deliver waste and recycling containers, and perform general street cleansing (as applicable).
Requirements and Conditions
  • A category D1 licence is required for this role. However, Category B licence holders who have held this entitlement for more than 2 years may also apply, as the Council will provide training where a D1 licence is not held.
  • Drivers must be over the age of 21.
  • A medical examination is required prior to appointment.
  • The role is physically demanding and involves bending, lifting, carrying, and walking on a regular basis.
  • As an Operative, you will work predominantly outdoors in all types of weather conditions, with some lone working.
  • The post holder is required to work as a Minibus Driver or Attendant for the SEND morning school or day centre run, then carry out their duties in the Neighbourhood Operative role, before returning to the Transport Depot to carry out the afternoon return school or day centre run. The post requires some flexibility to meet the needs of both services, including working outside of usual hours such as occasional weekends, bank holidays and evenings.
  • A DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service will be required before appointment for posts exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, supportive and passionate about helping others and their communities. They will be flexible and adaptable, able to manage varying situations, remain calm under pressure and adapt to change, benefiting our Service users and the Service.
