A leading energy company in the UK seeks a Nature, Biodiversity and Sustainability Specialist to integrate biodiversity into construction projects. The role involves collaboration with various stakeholders to align projects with biodiversity net gain (BNG) commitments, while delivering environmental benefits. Candidates should possess strong communication and organizational skills and experience in ecology, as well as data management expertise. Flexible working options are available, with a competitive salary ranging from £50,000 to £62,000.
The UK has set out its ambition to be net zero by 2050 and the energy industry is responding – together we are building a cleaner, greener Britain. Our team is growing and we are seeking a Nature, Biodiversity and Sustainability Specialist to ensure our construction projects and operations successfully integrate nature and biodiversity into our processes, deliver our Nature Positive commitments, including Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), and ensure that nature is at the heart of the energy transition.
Not only will you be helping to reverse the decline of UK biodiversity, but also to rebuild and restore the natural environment. You’ll be looking at onsite and off‑site opportunities, as well as nature‑based and nature‑positive solutions, that benefit nature, climate and communities.
Working as part of a knowledgeable, committed team you’ll contribute to National Grid’s Nature Positive strategy and direction. You’ll be working with strategic partners and organisations such as the RSPB and The Wildlife Trusts, gaining exposure to a huge variety of stakeholders, all the way up to the group executive.
This role will cover projects across the UK, so you’ll be able to travel as required and will primarily work from our main HQ office in Warwick, or from other U.K. offices. We continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full‑time and part‑time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. We look to recruit experts in their field who are confident, approachable, and brilliant communicators able to translate ideas and knowledge into language that any audience can understand. You’ll be organized and resilient, able to multi‑task well, and capable of working at a very detailed, granular level while also seeing the bigger strategic picture.
Ideally you have a background in a large organisation with a focus on BNG or practical experience coordinating and meeting biodiversity requirements (including BNG) through the planning process – either on the developer side or with Local Planning Authorities. Experience in ecology, nature‑based solutions and natural capital is desirable. A network of contacts at partner organisations is a plus. Experience managing nature and biodiversity data to gather insights and support decision‑making is also very useful.
We understand not everyone can meet every single requirement. At National Grid we’re committed to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace for everyone. If you’re excited about this role but your experience or qualifications don’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway.
National Grid has a key role to play in tackling climate change by accelerating our capacity to deliver clean electricity across the UK. We already operate the fastest decarbonising electricity grid in the world, with an ambition for zero‑carbon operation by 2025 and 100 % clean, green energy by 2035.
Our investment in Strategic Infrastructure via the Great Grid Upgrade will mean more home‑grown power, greater energy security and a cleaner future. Whatever your role, wherever you work with us, you’ll help us hit stretching targets and achieve our far‑reaching goal: to secure clean energy that supports our world far into the future. Here you will be at the heart of energy.
This role closes on Dec 17th at 23:59. Interviews will be held w/c 5th January 2026. We encourage candidates to submit their application as early as possible.
We work towards the highest standards in everything we do, including how we support, value and develop our people. We celebrate the difference people can bring into our organisation, welcoming and encouraging applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds, and offering flexible and tailored support at home and in the office.
We are committed to building a workforce that represents the communities we serve, and a working environment in which each individual feels valued, respected, fairly treated, and able to reach their full potential.
