Job summary

A local GP practice is looking for a part-time Medical Receptionist to be the welcoming face of their team. The role involves managing patient interactions, maintaining records, and supporting the clinical team. Ideal candidates will have good communication skills, attention to detail, and previous experience in a similar role. The position offers a friendly working environment, 16 hours per week with an hourly wage of £12.50. This is a fixed-term role for 6 months, starting as soon as possible.

Main duties of the job

What youll do:

  • Be the first point of contact for patients: in person, by phone, and online
  • Supporting patients to get the right care, from the right person, when they need it!
  • Manage patient records using clinical systems (e.g., EMIS)
  • Work closely with our GPs, nurses, and wider admin team
  • Handle sensitive information with care and professionalism
  • Help keep the practice running smoothly with general admin duties

Job responsibilities

Operations

Act as the first point of contact for patients and visitors, both in person and by phone.

Register and process patients on arrival.

Gather patient information to support triage or signpost to appropriate services.

Prepare the surgery for daily use, ensuring reception and consultation rooms are set up and tidy.

Support the clinical team, including handling samples and chaperoning when required.

Communicate messages clearly and promptly to the appropriate staff member.

Manage incoming correspondence (e.g. prescriptions, post, private work) within required timeframes.

Carry out general administrative tasks as required.

Safeguarding

Follow practice safeguarding procedures.

Escalate any safeguarding concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead or Practice Manager.

Clinical Governance, Health & Safety

Follow all company policies and procedures.

Maintain patient confidentiality and data protection at all times.

Work safely and keep work areas clean and hazard-free.

Report and support the management of incidents or complaints as required.

Personal Development

Complete all mandatory and required training.

Take part in appraisals and ongoing learning.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
Experience
  • What were looking for:
  • Friendly, calm and confident communication skills
  • Great attention to detail and the ability to multitask
  • Previous receptionist or admin experience (NHS or healthcare experience a bonus!)
  • A team player with a positive, can-do attitude
  • Comfortable using computers and learning new systems
  • Must have PC skills will be able to use basic Word, Excel and e-mail.
  • Knowledge of Primary Care Clinical systems - desirable
  • Excellent communicator, both spoken and written.
  • Able to maintain a professional and personal approach to all patients, despite the behaviours they demonstrate and stay calm.
  • Able to work as part of a team and communicate effectively with other team members.
  • Able to effectively manage own time and workload.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable dealing with changing priorities.
