Job summary

A marine engineering company based in Onley is seeking a Mechanical Fitter. The successful candidate will be responsible for the fitting and maintenance of diesel engines and electrical systems. Position: Mechanical Fitter

Duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Fitter:
  • Carry out the fitting, maintenance, and fault diagnosis of diesel engines, gearboxes, and drive train systems.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain AC/DC electrical systems, including both 12V and 240V installations.
  • Service, install, and repair diesel heating systems used in marine vessels.
  • Perform plumbing tasks as required, including installation and maintenance of onboard water systems.
  • Operate the boatyard’s 40‑tonne amphibious hoist to recover and launch narrowboats as part of scheduled work or emergency support.
  • Conduct servicing and repairs on historic or modern diesel engines, ensuring the highest level of care and customer satisfaction.
  • Attend offsite breakdowns and perform timely repairs, such as fixing hot water systems, to ensure customers’ boating plans can proceed without disruption.

If you have a welding or plumbing background, that would be an advantage.

Qualifications and requirements:
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems efficiently, and respond to emergencies both on‑site and off‑site.
  • Proven experience and/or formal qualifications in diesel engine, gearbox, and drive train fitting, maintenance, and fault finding.
  • Practical knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems, including experience with both 12V and 240V installations.
  • Plumbing knowledge is advantageous.
  • Availability to work weekends on a rotation basis.
