Overview

The Project Manager – Mechanical Engineering Projects leads the management, delivery, and maintenance of the Trust’s mechanical engineering infrastructure, ensuring systems are safe, compliant, and operational to support high-quality healthcare. Based at St George’s Hospital (with work across Trust sites), the role oversees in-house teams, consultants, and contractors, delivering projects in line with HTMs, HBNs, legislation, and Trust standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage mechanical engineering infrastructure systems including HVAC, water safety, medical gases, lifts, pressure systems, and energy centres; prepare and evaluate tenders; ensure statutory compliance; maintain Safe Systems of Work; act as an Authorised Person for relevant HTMs; manage a £2.5M budget to balance cost efficiency with service quality.
  • Recruit, train, and lead staff; foster a culture of safety and accountability; liaise with internal and external stakeholders; support sustainability initiatives; participate in emergency on-call duties; ensure minimal disruption to patient care during works.
  • Direct and manage the Estates Engineering Infrastructure Team and contractors; lead projects from design to completion; oversee procurement and ensure HTMs/HBNs and Trust standards compliance; act as Authorised Person for HTMs as trained; maintain governance and reporting.
  • Oversee planned and reactive maintenance; ensure asset and record management within CAFM systems; manage budget; identify cost improvement opportunities; develop staff and succession plans.
  • Stakeholder engagement: establish relationships with clinical teams, regulators, contractors, NHS Estates; liaise with local authorities and fire services; communicate effectively to non-technical audiences.
  • Support carbon reduction and sustainability; contribute to the Estates Sustainable Development Group; drive service improvement and efficiency gains without compromising safety or quality.
  • Emergency preparedness and on-call duties: participate in on-call rota, respond to emergencies, assist major incident responses, and work outside normal hours when needed.
  • Mandatory responsibilities: ensure compliance with Health and Safety, Data Protection, Equality and Diversity policies; maintain CPD; safeguarding responsibilities; support the Trust’s vision.
Position Summary

The Estates Manager – Mechanical Engineering Projects is a senior operational and technical leader within the Estates & Facilities Division of St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Based primarily at St George’s Hospital, the role requires flexibility to work across all Trust sites. Reporting to the Senior Estates Manager – Mechanical Engineering Projects and accountable to the Assistant Director of Estates, the postholder manages mechanical engineering infrastructure projects and associated operational teams to ensure safe, economical, and compliant services.

Role Context

The Estates & Facilities Division supports high-quality healthcare by ensuring the Trust’s estate is safe, attractive, and operational. The Estates Manager – Mechanical Engineering Projects contributes to strategic and operational planning, infrastructure upgrades, and continuous service improvement, overseeing a mix of in-house staff and external contractors to deliver projects with minimal disruption to patient care.

Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Essential: Degree/HND/HNC in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or relevant subject; management qualification or 2 years’ middle management experience in Estates; Incorporated Engineer status; 3 years’ post-qualification experience as an Authorised Person for at least two relevant HTMs; strong leadership, project management, and financial management skills; knowledge of NHS estates operations and statutory compliance.
  • Desirable: Chartered Engineer status; previous NHS experience; advanced Microsoft Office skills.
