Job description
Mechanical Craftsperson
Role Purpose

The Mechanical Craftsperson plays a vital role in the manufacture of cement products for the UK construction industry. Working as part of a multi-skilled team, this position is responsible for planned and reactive maintenance of fixed plant equipment to ensure maximum reliability and operational efficiency across the site.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and respond to unscheduled mechanical repairs.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, and Production teams to ensure effective task completion.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement safe working procedures; generate documentation as required.
  • Adhere to maintenance schedules and meet reliability targets.
  • Assist with inspections, defect resolution, fabrication of parts, and large-scale installations.
  • Operate plant equipment ensuring compliance with EN450AN standards and production tolerances.
  • Maintain high standards of safety in line with company Health & Safety policies, including PPE usage and safe operation of mobile plant.
  • Support SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) initiatives, including policy implementation and incident prevention.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and propose improvement actions.
  • Ensure housekeeping standards are and report deficiencies.
  • Complete IT-based reporting (e.g., SAP PM requirements).
  • Respond to out-of-hours breakdowns as part of a call‑out rota.
  • Suggest and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Time‑served apprenticeship in mechanical engineering craft.
  • NVQ Level 3 Maintenance or equivalent experience.
  • Proven mechanical experience in cement or similar heavy continuous process industry.

Preferred:

  • IOSH certification.
  • Knowledge of cement manufacturing processes.
Skills & Knowledge
  • Strong Health, Safety & Environmental awareness; ability to lead by example.
  • Mechanical expertise in heavy industry, including slinging, rigging, welding, and gas cutting.
  • Multi‑skilled maintenance capability.
  • Knowledge of equipment isolation procedures.
  • IT literacy (SAP experience desirable).
